The files typically say: VIDEO TS.BUP VIDEO TS.IFO VIDEO TS.VOB VTS 01 0.BUP VTS 01 0.IFO VTS 01 1.VOB and so forth Each disk is up to 3 hours of play time. What form can I change these disks to that would compress them as much as possible that would still play on a DVD player so I can share them with others without having to buy so many disks? I have a DVD Ripper which can convert video to many types such as MPEG-4 Video and DivX Movie. I know I would have to sacrafice some fidelity to reduce the file size but that is acceptable. Which format that would still play on a DVD player and be the most compact would be best to use? |

| VCD is the lowest and smallest compression of mpeg that will work on any DVD player or computer. VCD is mpeg1 compression and you burn it on regular cds but the quality is not so good but the benefit is that it will work on any computer outthere inculding all microsoft os with regular media players with no need to install suitable codecs on the macs I am not so sure but guess it will work also. Each disc can hold about 80min (on 700mb) When converting to mpeg1 chose the finest compression you can, do a test and see the results you get try a couple of programs as each one will give you different results seek for the best

| Thanks for the help. Sorry I guess my question was not clear. I want to burn to DVD not CD I just want to use a format that will take fewer DVD disks. In other words I would like to get more hours of video on each DVD. Is VCD a format for DVD? So DivX would take fewer disks than MPEG-4 |

| I see. Well, you should read some more details about what a DVD is and what a DVD-ROM can contain. As a very general overview, consider that a DVD video is a specific format which uses a specific codec to compress video, so you cannot change it. If you want a DVD in DVD-video format, you must stick to that. If you want to store your videos with a different codec (better than the one used for DVD-video, which is MPEG-2), such as MPEG-4 (like DIVX), you have to store your videos as FILES on a DVD-ROM. It may sound a bit complicated at first, but you can find all the info you need online. Look at: http://www.videohelp.com/dvd , for example. Regards Marco |

| VCD resolution is a valid DVD resolution, so yes, you could reencode the video at 352x240, keep the audio the same at 48kHz, and author it to a DVD and be able to pack a good amount on.

| Today there are many standalones able to play Divx. With divx you can obtain good compression with good quality. The best at all id DVD, but on a single disc you can put up to 4 movie with decent quality or a couple of movie of best quality. |

| 352x240 using either MPEG1 or MPEG2 is considered within DVD Spec, so I would just use 352x240 MPEG2 myself. If the source is good and the program used does a decent job of compression, you should be able to get 6 hours (or more) at 352x240 with decent quality, something similar to VHS. |
