What does this mean? (disc quality)

Hi,
I got 300pk stack of Verbatim 16x MCC 004 back in September 2011 and I have been making my way through it burning stuff for backup reasons.

I don't have any burning knowledge (yet)... I pretty much just burnt+verified them at 12x using IMGBurn. Never had a failed verify.

I would like to learn about disc and drive quality testing etc some day but it all seems kind of complicated so I have put it off for a rainy day.

So just now I grabbed a pre-burnt one at random from my box and checked it with Opti Drive Control:

Should I be worried? The red stuff looks kind of ominous, I take it this is a bad burn?

Try slowing your burn speed down to 8x or even 6x .
I don't have the specific software you use to check the quality.
I have the older free Nero software by the same author.
When you do a quality check also do the read slower 8X or even slower.

Liteon burners usually give more reliable results when scanning at 4x. Can you do again the scan and post the image here?

Here is a disc I burned today at 8x using IMGBurn. Then I test at 8x.

Maybe this is okay?

Re: What does this mean? (disc quality)

Check the scans in this thread with the same model drive as yours & compare results.

Re: What does this mean? (disc quality)

so here is one I just burned at 8x : (PIE = 2.56)
http://i46.tinypic.com/wbuiit.jpg

and here is one i burned at 16x: (PIE = 1.53)
http://i45.tinypic.com/nesv8h.jpg

Does this mean it is better to burn these discs at 16x with my drive? (PIE smaller = better ? )
Thanks

Actually PIF smaller = better. PIE are lesser cumbersome than PIF.

I'd say that 8x and 12x seems equivalent, so choose between these as is better for you. I usually burn my discs at 12x because I can save some time

So here is 12x burn today:
http://i47.tinypic.com/zyc1zo.jpg

The PIF numbers of 12x look lower than 8x and 16x

So 12x is the best speed for this media in my drive?
Thanks

Re: What does this mean? (disc quality)

Yes, 12x seems the best choice
