woops, jumped the gun. Anyway, what are the things MOST LIKELY to cause a backup dvd to freeze up on a standalone? I have noticed it quite a bit on otherwise seemingly good Verbatim DVD-R on my 812S@832S

Badly burnt media, ie loads of buffer under-runs or errors, try K-probe to see how bad the errors are.
Stand alone player picky about what type of media being used for backup.
Have a look here to see what your stand alone player supports. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

Are you using bit setting?

Re: What causes a DVD to freeze up and skip to another chapter?

i appreciate your help. Here are scans of some backups all done back-to-back yesterday, except for the last one, which was done earlier in last week. The drive has been defragged. Backup done on a DRU-500AX played fine, but I am fearful of these...The last one froze up towards the end of the movie. What are these scans telling you? To me, with the experience being that the movie has the propensity to freeze up towards the last 30 minutes tells me that obviously the problem is what is occurring at the end of the burn. Yes, I know that Liteons do not like DVD-R's that much. My Sony never had a problem with them and I have about 80 that I need to use up before I switch totally to +R's. Anyway, here they are:

Again, I appreciate your help. If I didn't mention it earlier, the drive is a 812S, 812s@832s, used omnipatcher, but I am not trying to boost burn times now.

Have sony DVP-NS700-P, went to that site you mentioned, I don't take huge stock in what I read because the comments were all over the board, plus I have never had problems with dvd-r with it before

Re: What causes a DVD to freeze up and skip to another chapter?

Have a look here to fully understand what P1/P0 errors are but there are a fair number of errors on one of your scans (scan pic 3) the others seem to be fine.

Poor playback for the last 30 minutes is due to mainly poor media (as you get towards the outer edge of the disc the quality seems to decrease) or buffer underruns (burning at a high speed will start burning at 1x then 2x and finally 4x to 8x as the disc gets towards the outer edge this can case similair lock-ups within the last 30 minutes of film), you don't say what media your using or what speed your burning at but try burning at 1x or 2x until you've used up your 80+ discs and change to a better / more compitable brand for your drive.

Re: What causes a DVD to freeze up and skip to another chapter?

Thank you bery much sir, this is starting to make sense to me now. BTW, the discs used were a mix of Verbatim Data Life DVD-R 4X, and Fujifilm DVD-R 4x..

Ya'know, this Kprobe2 scan thing fascinates the stew outa me, just have to show two last scans.

First one will be a backup done today with a Verbatim 8X DVD+R, burned at 6X.

The second is the exact same type of disc burned at 4X.

Re: What causes a DVD to freeze up and skip to another chapter?

Hmmmmm. Something to be said here about burning at a slower rate, period, at least with this Liteon. Is this something peculiar to the liteons? This is only my second burner.

Again, thanks Johnboy, you and the other bastions of knowledge in here make this just about the only place I frequent on the net. You are all welcome to come by the house here in Columbus Georgia and suck down a cold bottle of suds anytime.

Re: What causes a DVD to freeze up and skip to another chapter?

Well most people will quote "burn at a lower speed for better write quality" and that seems to be the case here.

Verbatim discs are considered to be top quality media so stick with them if you can.
