Re: walt disney movie to dvd

All Disney VHS movies have macrovision. This means you need to put your video signal through a time base corrector before sending it into your ATI card, or use some other capture device that ignores macrovision. The Canopus ADVC-100 comes to mind. (With the Canopus, you'll have to research how exactly to make it ignore macrovision, as it is an undocumented feature. I have tested this on my own ADVC-100 and it works perfectly on Disney VHS films.)

There are also other "video stabilizer" devices that you can buy at electronics stores that 'coincidentially' clean macrovision, but I really don't know what to recommend for those things as my ADVC-100 works well.

I personally use DVD Red PRO from Dimax www.xdimax.com
I have Sima product as well but Sima is not working good especially with old used VHS. Red PRO is much more tolerant in case of low quality Video.
It also works with DVD, so I can capture from DVD when I need to burn short scenes for example. So I do recommend at least to take a look at it.

I have a Sima CT-1 and it doesn't work on most copy protected tapes. Looking into a CT-2

Rolangator:

I had to transfer more than 600 VHS tapes that were mostly commercial tapes to get them onto a DVD. I was up against the same difficulty as you -- I could assume that most would have either Macrovision or CopyGard.

I purchased the following -- it is a budget "time base corrector." It handled ALL of these 600 VHS tapes, with no problems.

Click here to see the $190 Time Based Corrector.

In my case, due to the fact that I did not need to do editing, I decided to dub directory to a standalone DVD recorder. However, the device definitely worked, on every mainstream tape (including many Disney) in our family's sizable collection. This 8 month long project went smoothly, with the above device.

I had read that the Sima units would work with SOME of the various forms of copy protection that were used on VHS, but not others. I read this was even more true of the lesser expensive Sima unit.

Thus, I spent the extra money, and I am glad that I did. It also cleans up some of the errors inherent in video playback. It can also do some correction of color / chroma problems, where you find them.
