Please Help: VIDEO_RM is driving me nuts

| Thank you very much. I will try this again. I will post back with my results. The other reason I want to be able to watch the recorded video is that I transcribe episodes of a tv show for another site and it is so much easier to use my recording than watch on the official site. I can then grab caps as art for the transcript, when I am able. I enjoy volunteering to do this. So you see my need is now 2 fold since TV shows are starting new episodes. Transcribing and tv for a dear friend overseas. I now have another friend who is being sent overseas and would like me to record some tv for him also. Time to make dinner. |

| I would have posted this in the last post but I wanted it to be just the basic information for ImgBurn. I have other coping software that I use for other things but I have found ImgBurn the best for making copies of discs done on settop recorders. There are a couple of things it doesn't do. 1. It won't write from the HD back to the HD.(I think that's what you ask about) 2. It doesn't remove region code . On the rename that was from another members post & not in any instructions I've posted. My settop doesn't put in the DVD_REC.USR and PV_TEMP.USR files. I hope that isn't what's making the difference.I don't think it is. If you get ImgBurn to make a successful copy . DVDFab or DVDShrink are able to write the .iso from the ImgBurn build back to the HD. You probably will want to do this for the overseas discs you make since because either will remove the region code. I just didn't want to involve more programs than necessary till you had a sucessful copy with ImgBurn. It's been a long time since I installed VLC but if I remember correctly you just need to not let it associate files when it installs. Your correct WMP doesn't play DVD files easily. On Vista I can play a dvd disc on WMP if I want to.You just have to do it a certain way. That's why I ask if you have WMC instead because it loads a DVD much easier. This is how to play a DVD in WMP: 1. Open WMP . 2. In the File pulldown select OPEN. 3.Navigate to the DVD drive & the VIDEO_TS folder. Open it . 4.select all the media files by holding down the Shift key & selecting a file. That should highlight all the files. If for some reason it doesn't try the first & last file with the Shift key held down 5. select open WMP should start playing the files.I have WMP 11 |

To the OP you could try this as your decoder. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...eg_filters.htm |

| MysticEyes you are heaven sent. I installed the codec and now can watch the movie that I recorded from TV using WMP. I didn't have to do anything. I used the original to watch it and no problems whatsoever. I will work on the ImgBurn to get rid of the VIDEO_RM folder and create a disc in DVD format. (disc 1) Once I have succeeded with that then I will then go back to the .ISO and run DVDFAB or DVDShrink on the ISO file to remove the region code and then use that output as the source to burn a disc. (disc2) I will use +RW for these 2 scenarios. Once I have succeeded then I am really cooking with gas. I did see the Re-Author option with DVDShrink so I may also take a 3rd pass in the near future to see if I can edit extraneous stuff from before and after the movie. If I get there then I will be in business and all because of the most helpful folks here. ![]() On to working with ImgBurn. |

| OK my nightly update. I worked on this for 6 hours today. I uninstalled VLC and installed TopazMoment today. Had some problems with screen capture and using the slider. Posted on forum since I am not the only one with same problem. Switch gears. I used ImgBurn (Build mode) to use the VIDEO_TS folder from my recorded DVD. ISO Created. Used iso as source for ImgBurn (write) to target DVD+RW. Had much trouble trying to burn disc. Put disc back in DVD recorder and erased disc. Attempt ImgBurn (write) again and have AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders with files in VIDEO_TS. Try to play in Windows Media player. It plays however when I used the slider to change to different point in video it crashed. Similar problem to TM. Reinstall VLC with no associations. Try to play disc in VLC and if i hit pause or try to move the slider it stop running and crashes. Since I have no file associations to VLC anymore I have a problem with how to associate an .iso file. Also I have noticed that if I format or erase a disc on my D: drive the PC now associates with Sonic (have never used it) which is for recording CDs. I need to figure out how to now format a DVD on my PC. ![]() Tomorrow I am thinking about uninstalling VLC and re-installing with associations. I have no idea what to do at this point so I am calling it a night. Something happened after I uninstalled VLC and installed TM. I may restore to before my workings today. Before I forget, I used the .iso as input to DVDShrink to remove extraneous footage and change region code. I then had problems with the burning to a disc. Could have just been too tired and goofed. I will try to work this again tomorrow. I am really saddened that the slider bar is no longer working on WMP. The tc show/episodes I am to transcribe air tomorrow (Wed) night. Thank you again and I am sure I will get this sorted out with your help. |

| Boy,oh boy StarDew, this thread sure is living up to it's title..... ![]() Start with your freshly created ISO, right-click and 'open with' VLC...does it play properly? If it does, then go ahead and open in shrink and do your editing...Save to HDD(you do not need to create an iso)... Fire up Imgburn and use build mode>point to new VIDEO_TS folder and burn it... Only this time you might try a DVD+R or -R disc...And use good media(hint ,Verbatims).... You just may be having issues with, recording>formating/burning>erasing>burning etc.the same DVD+RW disc.. And frankly, you don't need WMP or TM whatever...VLC , Media Player Classic is all you need IMO..

| Thank you t0nee1. I apologize for my saga. I have learned a lot and am trying my best. I ran a system restore back to Monday evening and now my PC is stable again. Can format DVDs and D: drive is recognized properly. I will follow your instructions using a -R. I will also try the entire ImgBurn exercise again. I will post when I have finished. I would love to be able to use VLC since it works on every disc I have except the recorded ones. Have a great day. |

| StarDew; I used the disc I made with ImgBurn from a disc recorded on my settop. I tried it in WMP 11 & the slider did not work but WMP didn't crash either. The FF jumped forward like it was jumping to a new chapter. So WMP is probably not the best player for these discs. In VLC & WMC the slider & FF worked correctly. I don't have TM. On the no file associations with VLC. t0nee1's R click solution may work if VLC is already in the list.On My computer it is.In the others list. If it is not in the list you need to Browse to your Program Files/VideoLAN/VLC/vlc.exe click the vlc .exe & it will execute. While there why not just R click on the vlc.exe & Create Shortcut. Then you will have a VLC shoutcut on your desktop screen. Then you can just click the shortcut/File /open disc. DVDShrink will only write to the HD so you have to do that then burn to disc with ImgBurn t0nee1 ; The reason for doing the build with ImgBurn to .iso from the original settop recorded disc is I have found this works better for this type recording.Ones with the VIDEO_RM & VIDEO_TS folders. The reason I had StarDew write that .iso to a DVD +RW was to make sure that a working disc was created .One with an empty AUDIO_TS folder & a VIDEO_TS folder with standard DVD format files. Once StarDew got a good result that way I then was going to elimate the need to use the +RW's except for a test of the final method before burning to a +R or - R. The final method would be: 1.Build an .iso with ImgBurn. 2.Open that .iso with DVDShrink .Open Disc image. 3.Two options here: a.Use Full disc/Backup/DVDRegion check Region Free. (that would be if no editing is to be done) Then Backup with ISO Image File as the Select backup target. b. Use Re-author/Backup use the Set Start/End Frames edit as necessary. Then Backup with ISO Image File as the Select backup target. Again Region Free. To the HD Then from that .iso to the final disc with ImgBurn. Probably with an +RW the first time if all worked well to +R or -R . |

| I didn't suggest not to create an ISO from original recorded disc...I'm simply suggesting that once you've successfully created an ISO,and it plays flawlessly then, IMO there really is no reason to create iso again when using shrink ...Just backup to HDD> to new VIDEO_TS folder...

| The system restore helped and now WMP doesn't crash, it just has that slider issue. I tried the .iso with VLC and it played for about 10 seconds and got jumpy then when I moved the slider it froze up. I tried again using the VIDEO_TS folder that I created last night with the same result. Should I go back to their forum with this issue? I grabbed some of the log with verbosity level 2. main info: Running vlc with the default interface. I bought some new -R discs today by TDK. Circuit City didn't carry Verbatim. I will have to look elsewhere. I am going to start from scratch and use a new Memorex +RW disc for the first attempt. I am going to use ImgBurn to build an .iso from original VIDEO_TS folder then burn a new DVD with the .iso as input. I will hold off with the -R until I can get this functioning properly. I have a silly question and I know some are just rolling their eyes at me however, should I format the +RW and -R before I burn to it? I **ducks behind the sofa** Thank you very much. Your help is greatly appreciated. |
- #38
| You don't have to format +RW disc, unless of course you're using your standalone Recorder... Yes,the best thing to do is start over...Build ISO from original DVD and then write/burn iso to disc... Good luck! BTW,did you try using DVD decrypter,as imkidd57 suggested? Sorry I just don't want to go back and re-read all the thread.....

| StarDew;I looked over my ImgBurn settings to see if I could find out why I was getting better results. I have AnyDVD & CloneDVD2 so I had set the Tools/settings/ I/O interface ElbyCDIO Elaborate Bytes selected.I think ImgBurn needs at least CloneDVD2 installed to have the correct files for that setting to work. I tried with the default setting SPTI Microsoft & DVDShrink wouldn't even load the .iso. So it did better for you on this type DVD than it did for me with the default settings. Since ImgBurn & DVDDecrypter are both by LIGHTNING UK! the settings & burning are very similar. So I don't think DVDDecrypter will work any better. So my apologies for this. Both AnyDVD & CloneDVD2 are commercial software so not free. I'm not suggesting you get them to do what you are trying to do. You posted DVDFab5 will not read the disc.I had some problems with DVDFab5 Free version too so I no longer have it.I went back to an older version of DVDFab HD Decrypter the specific one I'm using is Version 3179 beta Free edition. This version rips a good copy which works for my settop DVDs with the Video_RM & VIDEO_TS folders. These load in DVDShrink if they need to for editing. So my new suggestion is to try an older version of DVDFab HD Decrypter. StormJumper a forum member will e-mail you a version you request if he has it.He might not have the specific one I'm using but should have one that is close & maybe not a beta . DVDFab HD Decrypter won't burn to your DVD disc so you will need to use ImgBurn to burn the DVD folders or .iso file from DVDFab HD Decrypter. DVDFab HD Decrypter will rip a copy either way.It will also make them region free. |

| t0nee1 Yes I tried using DVD Decrypter and change the .vts to .mpg and I had the same problem. imkidd57 I re-installed Cyberlink PowerDVD that came with my PC. It is the player only. I am able to watch the DVD I burned Tuesday and it worked fine. I can pause, fast forward with no problem. The slider bar works also. Since there install included an encoder I went back to try and play the DVD in WMP and had the same problem with the slider but the movie played. I am going to do some research and see if I can find drivers for my NEC DVD +RW ND-3450A drive. My video card is an integrated INTEL Extreme Graphics 2. I will look for drivers for that also. cholla Thank you very much for the information. I will ask him for an older version of DVDFAB Decrypter via PM in a few days. In the meantime I have to work on some transcribing. I will look for drivers first, attempt the exercise again with a clean +-RW and send the PM. I will post back in a few days. Thank you all very much. |

| StarDew; I worked with this till I got a good working copy that worked with WMP. I was able to do this with the default ImgBurn I/O setting of SPTI Microsoft . Here is the procedure that worked: 1.Copy & Paste the VIDEO_TS folder to a folder on your HD. When it finishes you need a software FixVTS available here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/vi...ols/fixvts.cfm Here is a guide for FixVTS: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/arch...xvts_guide.cfm Follow the guide with the copy & pasted files as the source. The backup folder will have the original copy & pasted files. It will be named FixVTSBackup. This folder will be in the original folder. The files in the original folder will be the fixed files. 2.Create a VIDEO_TS folder & Move the fixed files to it. 3. Create a folder with the name of the recorded TV shows. Move the fixed file VIDEO_TS folder to it . 4.Load this folder into DVDShrink. 5.Full Disc/Backup/ TargetDevice/Select backup target:/Hard Disk Folder Select target folder for DVD output files:New folder with name you choose 6. DVD Region/ Region Free Then OK . DVDShrink will make a backup with a new AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS folder. 7.That will be the folder you burn with ImgBurn to DVD disc. Select build mode with the named folder as the source & your DVD burner as the destination. Done this way the slider worked correctly in WMP & VLC. |

![]() cholla Thank you. I will try this. I have made some progress. I can now use ImgBurn to create an .iso and then use that to create a disk with AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. VLC is a problem however I can watch using the disk with WMP, PowerDVD player and TopazMoment. PowerDVD and TopazMoment have no problem with the slider using the new disc or the original. I had a friend do the same thing on their PC and had the same results. I have used DVD Decrypter to create a folder with AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS and ImgBurn to create a new disc. I have used DVD Decrypter to write from an .iso also. I have played with DVDShrink to change region code and to lop off parts of the recording to make it neat then ImgBurn. I have used the DVDFab 5 decrypter and then ImgBurn to write. I have had some success in that when it comes to recorded from tabletop LiteOn these disks function in TopazMoment. I am trialing that for captures. I am very eager to try your new suggestion. I will work on it then post back. I have learned a great deal and appreciate everyone's help. I hope to help someone someday too. ![]() Report back soon. |
- #44
| cholla I followed your instructions on the first try. I used the full disk option with FixVTS. The slider does move and stay put now with a twist. ![]() I still have the buffer overflow problem with VLC if I use the open disk or open file and select the proper .vob file. I can move and stop the slider though. When I move the slider in WMP, it stops and then WMP crashes with: AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 11.0.5721.5145 ModName: qdvd.dll ModVer: 6.5.2600.2180 Offset: 0004888c I have decided that since I reloaded PowerDVD player, I can play the original recording of my movies/tv shows with this software or Topaz Moment. I am able to pause, resume, move the slider to change to a different time/place in the movie. This will be my solution. ![]() The solution for my friend overseas will be to use cholla's process(es) for anything I record. ![]() I will purchase Topaz Moment to watch and take my snapshots for video I record with my LiteOn table top recorder. I can use VLC or Topaz Moment for anything else. I will not purchase DVDFab5 Gold/Platinum. I can decrypt with the free software from DVDFab, DVDDecrypter and ImgBurn. Anything I want to change a bit, i.e. region code or start/stop frames, I will use DVDShrink. Any output that goes to my HD, I will use ImgBurn to burn a DVD. I have saved all the URLs and instructions provided here in a Word document and bookmarked various sites/pages. I now have a means to accomplish my intended goals. ![]() I have no words that express, enough, my appreciation for everyone's help and especially the patience on this site. I have already used what I have learned and helped a neighbor back up his kids' DVD library. I have and will continue to recommend this site to anyone who wants an abundance of information and great people all in one place. ![]() Special thank you to cholla, t0nee1, MysticEyes, imkidd57 for going the extra mile for me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Dew |

| StarDew ;You're welcome.Glad you got a result you can use. Probably the minor problems with the copy that still exist could be things like your burner. Most likely a different brand settop unit. I'm using Vista & you are using XP. The WMP I'm using is slightly newer version but that would probably just take an update for yours. Even my WMP had an ocasional stop with the slider but if I waited it caught up & played fine. VLC under video pulldown will take a snapshot. Another freeware player will also take snapshots GOM player. It has a feature in it's control panel which you can get by R clicking on its screen.Called Advanced Capture if you use the Burst Capture it will take up to the next 999 frames (less if you set it less). With it I sometimes have to add the individual .vob but the capture feature is cool. Just one other question; How does the copy play on your settop unit? |
- #46
| Hi cholla My burner is a NEC DVD +RW ND-3450A. I checked and all the firmware is current. I tried GOM several months back and it wouldn't work for me. I would launch it and it would crash and I would get that annoying MS message about would you like to send the report etc. That is what is happening with WMP now. I looked for updates and couldn't find any for XP.The copy plays perfect on my set top unit. It may be a convoluted solution but I can work with it. Maybe someday when I can work again I will buy a Mac. ![]() Thanks again. ![]() Dew |

| StarDew;Your NEC burner is probably OK they have a good reputation.A friend of mine has one he swears is the best reader hes had.He made me a copy of a scratched disc I had & couldn't get either of my burners to read all the way through. You said you have PowerDVD so you are probably OK with this .I had a trial version one time & when I did the uninstall it took these two files:clvsd.ax claud.ax . So if you uninstall it you want to make a copy of those files & save them somewhere. Then put them back & register them with regsvr32.They are probably in your System32 folder that's the Vista location. One other prolbem software I had installed was AVI2DVD.It caused WMP not to play certain files. The uninstall corrected the problem. If you are interested in the GOM player I will tell you how I got it to work with Vista.Just installing it doesn't make it work correctly. |
