VCD pirates resort to CD-Rs, up to 10 writers in one system

Malasian Video CD (VCD) pirates are now starting to discover how to make dozens of copies with home CD-RW drives. Before many used factories to get their pirated copies, but this gets more and more dangerous. By using a computer system with multiple writers some were able to sell about 500-600 discs a day.

Investigators also found two computers equipped with ten CD-RW drives. In Malaysia piracy is currently a pretty big issue, the Asian country suffers from one of the highest piracy rates in the world.

The first case was detected in April but it was not until recently that pirated disc sellers were believed to have turned to computers for their supply. In the latest case on Friday, Firdus said enforcement officers received a tip-off that a couple were copying music and movies onto discs in a house in a village in Batu Arang.

"We seized two computers with a total of 10 trays as well as 5,500 discs from the couple. From invoices found in the house, we believe that the couple sold between 500 and 600 discs a day to pirated CD and VCD sellers," he said. He added that the enforcement officers found several video cassette re-corders in the house as well, indi-cating that the couple may have been in business for many years.

On the nationwide raids against CD and VCD pirates, he said the ministry had seized 2,770 pornographic and 695,453 pirated discs valued at RM5.17 million between May 12 and yesterday. Yesterday, enforcement officers seized 1,996 pirated VCDs valued at RM9,980.

I wonder if they have read our "Burning with multiple writers" article. They could also visit our recently introduced Duplication Forum to learn how to duplicate a lot of discs very fast. Read the entire story here.
