| Hi All New to the forum, but not new to burning, ripping etc, but we all have some probs at times. Mine at the moment is not so much the drive, but the media. I'm using Datawrite red top +R DL disks, mainly because they are cheap and work fine in my Panasonic DMR-EX75 DVD recorder. The problem is while playing back disks burnt on the sony and then played back on the panasonic. When the layer break is reached the picture will pause and skip back and forth for about 10 seconds and then carry on (Mostly)........ other times it will just freeze and I have to bin the disk. So, I was wondering if anyone else has used these disks with the sony and had similar problems. I have also tried a Verbatim -R DL and this worked perfectly. Using DVD Identifier I noticed that the dye used with the datawrite disks (RICOHJPN) D01 is not on the compatability list of the Sony drive. I have tried updating the firmware hoping this may help the problem, but get a message saying (Target SONY AW-G170A is not found correctly), and this is the official firmware update from Sonys website. Anyway, to cut to the chase, can anyone recommend a good reliable, not too expensive Dual Layer Disk that works well with this drive. Many Thanks, Gazza. |

| Welcome to the forum ![]() Generally I'd recommend Verbatim +R DL....yes, they're more expensive, but IMO it's worth it knowing that they'll be good quality discs. Maybe CMC are another option, a few people have said they're OK. Not sure what brands you'd find them under, though. If it were me, I'd stick with Verbs for the peace of mind. I have some RICOHJPN D01s here and to be honest I'm not impressed

| Hi Thanks for the reply, I know that Verbs would be the best option, but to be honest I just can't afford them, at least not the quantity I need at the moment. I believe I may have a couple of bad batch's, because My Panasonic DVD recorder won't format them, and I've never had any problems with them before. Maybe choosing some disks with the Dye supported by the Sony would be the next best option. Below is the Sony compatability list, Seems a bit limited though !! ---------------------------------- Sony DVD RW-AW-G170A ---------------------------------- Media Compatability DVD+R DL ---------------------------------- Maxell 2.4X DVD+R DL (RICOHJPN D00) Maxell 2.4X DVD+R DL (RICOHJPN D00) Maxell 2.4X DVD+R DL (RICOHJPN D00) Traxdata DVD+R DL (RITEK D01) Traxdata DVD+R DL (RITEK D01) Traxdata DVD+R DL (RITEK D01) Verbatim 8X DVD+R DL (MKM 003) Verbatim 8X DVD+R DL (MKM 003) Verbatim 8X DVD+R DL (MKM 003) Samsung Pleomax 2.4X DVD+R DL (RITEK D01) Samsung Pleomax 2.4X DVD+R DL (RITEK D01) Samsung Pleomax 2.4X DVD+R DL (RITEK D01) Philips 2.4X DVD+R DL (-) Philips 2.4X DVD+R DL (-) Philips 2.4X DVD+R DL (-) Imation 2.4X DVD+R DL (RICOHJPN D00) Imation 2.4X DVD+R DL (RICOHJPN D00) Imation 2.4X DVD+R DL (RICOHJPN D00) --------------------------------- Media compatibility DVD-R DL --------------------------------- Verbatim 6X DVD-R DL (MKM 01RD30) Verbatim 6X DVD-R DL (MKM 01RD30) Verbatim 6X DVD-R DL (MKM 01RD30) Regards, Gazza. |
| Hi All With reference to the beginning thread, I did a little investigation work today. I decided to have a look at the batch code of the Datawrite DVD +R DL disks I had used with my Panasonic DVD recorder without any problems. The Code on these Disks is IFPI HAD02, Looking at the other disks I have here at the moment, the codes are IFPI HAD01, IFPI HAD04 and IFPI HAD90. A little experiment soon showed that the HAD04's and HAD90's were duds, with the panasonic unable to format the disks, and freezing at the layer break after being recorded on the Sony and played back on the Panasonic. The IFPI HAD01's on the other hand, formatted ok in the Panasonic and when written to on the Sony and played back on the Panasonic played ok with just the normal 10 second glitch at the layer break . I would be interested to know if anyone else has had similar problems with these disks....... I certainly won't be buying anymore Regards, Gazza. |

With DVD media on sale these data for fraction of the prices use to be, just try to go buy Sony, Verbatim, Fuji or even Maxell name brand media instead of spending so much time finding about main problem on your media. Media brand name and quality make lot of differences with you r burning process... |
