Hello people!

Just bought one of these drives and it's working fine with DVD's.

Does it play or read CD's at all as it doesn't seem to at the moment....?

I can't even get the disc which came with the drive to read, however a windows 7 DVD and DVD films play fine.

Any advice or patches I could install?

Yep, the drive both reads and burns CDs/CD-Rs/CD-RWs.

To check that there's nothing wrong with the drive hardware-wise, if you have a bootable CD (say a Windows XP or earlier disc), can you try booting from that?

You'll have to alter the Boot Sequence in your PC's BIOS to make the Samsung the first boot drive to check this (usually there's a message on-screen when you first boot up your PC, "Press DEL to enter Setup" or similar).

Hi there - thanks for your reply.
Just tried 2 boot from an old xp disc and still nothing from the new drive.
But just played another movie DVD in it and it works fine...
Are there 2 different lenses in this drive?

Just to be absolutely sure, you made the Samsung drive, the first boot device in the BIOS?

If that's definitely the case, and it still wouldn't boot your XP disc, then it does sound like the CD part is damaged, or has died completely (was this drive new when you got it?).

However, trying it on another PC is always worth a go, if you have access to another one with a spare SATA connection.
