Hello,
I have had a dream (I know no jokes) to have all my DVDs backed up onto my computer and set up a system to play them from there. I have obtained a decent computer that I intend to use for this but have not found a good program (prefreably free) to rip the movies from, no have I found any good ideas for an interface that I can put on the computer to play them from. Any suggestions are welcome.

I am going to use a P4 Dell running XP Pro. 1 gig of memory. I have not gotten a video card to handle the output to the TV but that is simple to do.

Buy AnyDVD (lifetime upgrade), then copy the VIDEO_TS folder to the HDD.

Dvd decryptor (just google for it) is easy to use and should work fine for many movies (not some of the newer ones with the latest copy protection though). Ripit4me is also a good one for the latest copy protections.

Both are free. I have to agree with furballi though, anydvd is the best (though not free). After installing it you can just right click the little fox icon in the bottom right corner of your screen and there is an option to rip. there is a free trial if you want to try it out. With any of these programs you basically want to end up with a video_ts folder (and often an audio_ts folder) with the same basic files you would find on the dvd. Many software players that are designed to play dvd's are capable of playing these folders (windvd etc). Personally I use nero showtime on one computer and either nero showtime or ati's player (included with my old radeon 8500 vid card) on the other. If you want to go simple, you just need some player software that can play from a video_ts folder on your hard drive, and a decent cordless mouse. I have a logitech mx610 that works just fine from across the room. If you want to go a little fancier, you can rig something up with a remote control. When you look for a vid card with a composite or svideo out (to go to your tv), consider a multimedia type card like an ati all in wonder that has a remote control. These remotes can often be programed to control other software like players.
you can also get remote recievers that work with normal tv remotes like this.

I think the expensive logitech remotes can also work in this capacity (I never wanted to spend that much on a remote so I don't know for sure).
You can go all out and set up a media server, or like I said, just use a mouse and a player, or anything inbetween.

Fyi these kinds of computers are refered to as home theatre personal computers (htpc for short).

I have looked into this but have not set one up yet (I might soon as I have a spare computer that is not in use) so I cannot say what is good, but I do know there are a lot of options out there. just try googling "htpc" and you should find lots of info including some sites/forums dedicated just to setting up media servers like these.
Hope that helps some.
