| Every time I attempt to write to the discs of Plextor 'Taieo Yuden' brand on the new Plextor PX-608CU DVD writer at 8x (as it says it can cope with) I get a write error. The DVD writer is brand new and the discs were bought via a link from Plextors very own website on recommended media. Do I need to download some particular software or firmware as I have checked their website and cannot find anything for the 608CU with regards to updates etc.?? I have recently reformatted my machine and the nero software I am using shipped with the writer. the error that appears are: - could not perform end of Disc-at-once - burn process failed see the following log report: Code: Nero Burning ROM Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 07/07/2006 11:00:00 Nero Version: 6.6.0.1 Internal Version: 6, 6, 0, 14 (Nero Express) Recorder: <PLEXTOR DVDR PX-608CU>Version: 1.44 - HA 2 TA 0 - 6.6.0.14 Adapter driver: <> HA 2 Drive buffer : 2000kB Bus Type : via Inquiry data (1) -> ATAPI, detected: ? | The Nero version is too old and the Plextor has a connection problem.

| So if i update my version of NERO will that sort the connection problem?? |
| It will solve part of the problem but _chef_ (whose technical knowledge is excellent...) has indicated that your drive has not been connected properly. If you are technically able, turn off the machine and AC power, take the drive out and examine all connections. Restart the PC without the drive, then immediately switch it off after Windows appears. Put the drive back in after first checking that all is right...slave/master jumper in the right position, ribbon cable correctly secured, etc... and then restart your machine and, hopefully, Windows will re-install the unit correctly in the registry and everything will work as it is supposed to.

| The drive is usb bus powered so the ac power source plugs into 1 usb port and data transfer is done down another? |
| Are you using USB hubs on the front of the pc, or on the back? Are your usb ports 1.1 or 2.0? I would try using the usb ports on the back of the pc, as those are coming directing off the card (without extra wires or connectors), and use the newer version of Nero or IMGBURN. If you have other usb devices connected and they are not needed for this procedure, try disconnecting them before trying to burn.

| I am using a HP Pavillion zv5000 laptop. It has 3 USB 2.0 ports. There are 2 on the left hand side of the unit and 1 on the right hand side (none at front or back). I am pluggin both the usb power cable and the usb data transfer cable into the ports located on the left (as the wires aren't that long) and nothing is plugged in elsewhere. So you get differing USB 2.0 speeds depending on the machine and where they are located on the laptop? The laptop has 1Gb RAM and the processor is an AMD Athlon 64bit 3400. It is only a year old so I'm unsure as to why the USB ports wouldn't be providing enough power?? |

Have you tried to burn Cds so far? Did it work? Maybe you should try to burn with another program, cdburnerxp and Imgburn are two free excellent choices. Quote:

| Rob your exactly right, the drive needs to be plugged in to the wall for it to burn at its stated 8 speed. I'm a bit annoyed as to why this wasn't displayed anywhere, i.e. the unit came with no instructions just a s/w disc and it's not to be found anywhere on the internet. Bad marketing I guess as this drive isn't as easily 'portable' as it makes out. Anyway, just to set the record straight after upgrading Nero that was bundled with it and plugging the Plextor PX-608CU into the wall will give it it's desired writing speed, using it just with its USB bus power will give you 6x MAX. Thanks for all the help guys. |
| njwilli3....for the record, amd powered main boards often come....for some odd reason with usb ports that are way under volted compared to intel main boards (AMD w/VIA Chipsets anyways). This also a common problem synching up digital cameras....cam corders........etc.... So don't feel bad...
