Hello,

I've been scouring the Internet in an attempt to understand the difference between a PIF and an PO value. I understand pretty much everything else, e.g.

PI = PIE = Parity Inner Error, which will undergo Parity Inner Correction Attempt
PIF = Parity Inner Failure, Attempt to correct PIE with inner parity failed

PO = POE = Outer Parity Error = What remains after parity inner correction? Wouldn't this mean POE = PIF? ... ?!?

POF = Parity Outer Failure, i.e. a POE could not be corrected on the outer parity level. This is a hard error that causes a CRC32 read error and makes the DVD unusable. Maybe the DVD can still be read in a better DVD drive that will still be able to correct the POE, thereby avoiding the POF.

Some people say PIF = POE, others say PIF != POE. So how are these two related?!? Is one always greater than the other? Is it a matter of definition? How much can the relationship between PIF and POE vary? (factor of 4x or larger etc.)?

Thanks!!

If you search some more withing this forum, you will find examples showing what is acceptable as far as PI/PO, or PIF/POF. Basically PI errors can be as high as 200, and still have a readable disc, whereas PO errors over 8 are not good. In actuality, you look at the average PI/PO, but you still don't want any spikes in PI that run high, or in PO that are above say 8 or 9. If you use CDSPEED disc quality test, all you have to worry about is the disc quality score which is shown in a box. As long as your disk quality score is 88 - 100, your disc should be readable, but you should truely strive for quality scores of 93 and above.
