PBDS DS-8W1P region firmware

Newbie Forum Discuss, PBDS DS-8W1P region firmware at Starters forum; Hi, I'm new So...I just got my new DELL D830 laptop and would like to update the firmware on my DVD drive to allow it to be region free. Model# says: PBDS DS-8W1P, not sure though who's the manufacturer. Any hints on finding the right firmware? Cheers

Model# says: PBDS DS-8W1P, not sure though who's the manufacturer.

Any hints on finding the right firmware?

That's a newer lappy drive so they might not have the firmware to mess with. Only site i know of for dedicated region free f/w's.

After spending 20min in dell.com I found out that PBDS stands for "Philips & BenQ Digital Storage"

I googled this company name but found no website!!

Lite-On took over BenQ's optical drive dept. so that's why i'm guessing it's a Lite-On.

You are 100% right, sorry for the confusion. I just found a post in this forum where someone has managed to flash the same model as mine with lite-on firmware.

I have the same model as you and made it region free here
http://dhc014.rpc1.org/LtnRPC/

This does not reflash the whole firmware it just makes the drive region free.

dont forget you need to use genie after making it region free so it plays movie without loosing keys and yes it works under vista too

So, is that u just used LtnRPC to switch it to rpc1, without change the firmware?
(LtnRPC does not change firmware at all :P)

I just wonder is there any maching LiteON drive model that is physically the same as the PBDS DS-8W1P..
