NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

Hello,

I would appreciate any advice you could give me after i've gotten myself into a pickle...

I was having lots of problems with my son's pc, tried to re-install Windows XP but it wouldn't let me. So then I took the hard drive out and gave it to a friend who had a sata external hard drive caddy and asked him to format the drive. I thought (mistakenly) that this would allow me to install my genuine copy of windows onto the drive and start afresh.

Wrong....

I haven't changed any settings...I marked the cables so I know I've put them back correctly...I've changed the boot sequence to boot from the cd.

After switching on and pressing any key to boot from CD I have a message which states that the NTLDR is missing and press ctrl+alt+del to restart

I don't know how many partitions there are..

Please help

Many thanks

Sue

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

Is that XP disc a OEM or Retail XP install disc? NTLDR usually means you will have to reformat cause it needs that to run windows. If you have a Full Retail XP you should be able to delete any partition making it one or multiple partitions. But without know more on your computer specs and hardware and how the HDD is connected its hard to know what else to do next.

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

Windows disc is: Windows Xp Professional service pack 2 (version 2002) full version not OEM.

If it helps:
motherboard is: AS Rock P4VM900 - SATA2
Hard drive: Maxtor diamond plus SATA 160GB HDD
VIA VT8237S SATA Raid Controller.

I'm assuming that if the hard drive has been formatted it will only have one partition. Am I right?

I tried that link earlier before asking for help. Problem is that I would have to have some sort of operating system to use it and I don't.

Thank you...I appreciate your time and help!

Sue
If you are getting this message you are not booting from the CD.

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

If it has been wiped out completely it will not have any partition.

To make sure you can remove all data on the disk using this. After that, If you then boot with a geniune XP or Vista setup disc it should be able to install without any problem.

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

I am sure I'm attempting to boot from CD.
I just went into the bios and disabled the hard drive and floppy just to be sure leaving only the cd/dvd drive enabled as the 1st in boot sequence.
I am clicking the space bar (tried otherstoo) when prompted to 'press any key to boot from cd......

Mr. Belvedere,

How can I get this Active Kill Disc onto my son's broken pc without it affecting my working one? If I download it will it run on my working pc and delete all my files?

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

I've have never seen a missing NTLDR error from a Windows install disk, but anything is possible. Do you have any other bootable disks available? If not, you can download this little linux distro, burn it to CD, and try to boot from it: http://www.kolibrios.org/. It's less than 10MB.

Are you sure the bios is picking up the CD/DVD Drive ?
It truly does not sound like it is.

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

I've tried changing the cd rom to check it was working properly but got the same results....
Will the windows cd run if there is no partition on the hard drive due to it being formatted?

Yes if the drive is working and the CD is good it will start with or without being formatted. Even if there is no hard drive at all, the cd should start.

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

Ok...would it be a good idea for me to unplug the hard drive and try to boot cd from cd drive? Would that narrow it down?

Would resetting the bios help?

Thank you all I really do appreciate your help!

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

Your PC is not booting from the CD/DVD Drive, I had an old Plextor Drive that got to that point and I had to use a different Drive to boot from my Win XP disc. If you disconnect all drives, optical and hard drive except the one you boot from you should be able to boot into the CD although i think it will quickly error out when it tries to copy files to your hard drive but that would be a different error than what you are getting. Time to try a new optical drive.

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

I disconnected the hard drive and pc booted and started the windows set-up....which is good! But when I connected the hard drive I'm back to the same NTLRD missing.
Seems there is some problem with the pc booting from cd rom then.
I've restored the default settings and gone back and changed the boot sequence to cd rom drive then hd....still error message.

Is it safe to start pc without hd connected then connect it? or will I electrocute myself?

Yes you can try that, that would let us know that it is not picking up the HDD.

You can try and clear the CMOS to clean it up.

Are your CD drive and hard drive on the same cable?

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

Whappo

The Op stated earlier that it was a sata drive I believe there may be a conflict in the BIOS on how it is picking it up

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

Hard drive is on a sata cable and the cd rom is on an ide (think that's what it's called), the old fashioned thick plastic with the master and slave options. Which is how it was when it was working....

I can't find any cmos jumper so i've taken the battery out so will have to leave pc for half hour or so before I put it back.

Please don't all go away!!!

They are hard to find sometimes.
I found your board but they did not have a manual to download or look at.

Here's the link if you do not have the original disc that came with the MOBO you will need the drivers off of this site after you get XP loaded.
You would start with the VIA 4 in 1 driver

Is this your motherboard?
http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.as...=P4VM900-SATA2

It sounds like what the others are saying it tries to boot from the HDD instead of the CD drive itself. Check you BIOS to see if the boot setup is listing the cd drive as the first boot device and the HDD as the second. I do agree that the NTDLR missing is something that would be on a HDD and what it is trying to do is boot from the HDD instead of the CD drive. Also if you can clear the CMOS and reboot and then reset the settings for the correct hardware and then make sure the first book order is the cd drive and then the HDD. It might still ask you to "Press any key" to go to the cd drive to start your setup procedure. I know mine does this to me whenever I do a complete wipe and reinstall my XP sp3 O/S Full. Also sometimes it does require you to have a Floppy disk to install drivers aka "F6" key press function but you will have to check the motherboard site to see if that what they tell you in the instructions.

Re: NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

ok cmos battery did it's stuff but didn't solve the problem. Again I managed to boot the disc if I remove the hd.
Checked some bios settings (which i'm not so familiar with and don't want to mess too much), and found the following settings which 'may' be significant. Only cause the cd rom drive is named differently. Does it have any significance?

ADVANCED TAB
primary ide master device - atapi cdrom

BOOT TAB
boot cd/dvd drives
1st drive [cd/dvd;pm-cd-524ea]

oh and yes my motherboard is ASROCK P4VM900-SATA2
