My DVD Player Won't Recognize Anything

Hi everyone, I'll just get to the point.

I have a HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B and it doesn't recognize any disc I put in (DVD or CD). Now, since this is my dad's computer and he doesn't really know computers, I can't tell when was the last time this device worked (but I do know it did before) or what was the thing that caused it to malfunction.

I tried several discs (both DVD's and CD's) and none of them worked. Just to be sure there's nothing wrong with the discs, I also tried some of the CD's on my CD-R burner and it did work.

I'm clueless as to what the problem is and would appreciate any help you guys can offer.

P.S. I don't know if this helps, but here's my Nero InfoTool data:

Re: My DVD Player Won't Recognize Anything

I already did that but I figured there's no reason posting a screenshot since it says: Type: "no disc inserted" and everything else is marked "n/a".

What country are you in? I notice your region code for your drive is set to REgion 2.

Open Device Manager and see if you have any yellow "?" or "!" showing up.
You also have the drive as slave on the same IDE cable as your hard drive, which isn't the best way. It should be on a Ide channel of its own.

Re: My DVD Player Won't Recognize Anything

harley2ride, I live in Israel.

wobble, there's only a "X" showing up next to my Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller, but that doesn't bother me since it doesn't have anything to do with my DVD player and my internet connection is fine.

As for the IDE, I'm not really intelligent on the subject, but that's the large thin cable with 2 rectangle plugs, one in the middle and one at the end, right? Well, I opened my case and here's how it's arranged: There are 3 IDE cables, on each there's a small printout that says what it's for: one is "Floppy", the other is "HDD" and the third says "CD-ROM". Now, the "CD-ROM" is connected with its far end to the burner. The "Floppy" is connected (can't remember with what plug) to the floppy drive and the "HDD" is connected with its far end to the DVD player. There's no IDE cable connected to the HDD (well, at least not one of those large grey thin cables).

I tried unplugging the "HDD" cable from the DVD (leaving the cable unplugged) and plugging the "CD-ROM" cable into the DVD (thus leaving the burner detached), thinking maybe there was something wrong with the "HDD" cable or maybe it just wasn't meant to be plugged into the DVD player, but that didn't work - the DVD still couldn't recognize any disc I put in, DVD or CD.

Re: My DVD Player Won't Recognize Anything

Yes, certainly worth trying. I once had an image to describe this process... aha, here it is:

If 'Scan for hardware changes' doesn't work, then uninstall again and reboot instead as DaChew indicates.

Re: My DVD Player Won't Recognize Anything

Will it boot from a disc? e.g. Windows XP setup

(Make sure you change the boot order in BIOS setup.)

Re: My DVD Player Won't Recognize Anything

JPack, 1st boot device is HDD; 2nd is DVD; 3rd is floppy.
My burner isn't showing up as an option - is that normal?

Re: My DVD Player Won't Recognize Anything

You can restore the system to an earlier date (may be a month ago) reboot the system and see if that resolve your problem if that doesn’t work your best bit would be to reformat your hard drive and reinstall the programs.

Re: My DVD Player Won't Recognize Anything

I think the next thing to do is try the drive in another computer, it's probably toast.
