Mount Rainier I want to buy a cd-rw drive and don't know which I should buy. I looked different tests up and made my favorites. First the AOpen 24/10/40,because it's cheap and has good speed, then the new Mitsumi CR-480ATE besause it's better in speed than the AOPen but not so cheap, and the Yamaha CRW3200, because of the Mount Rainier technology. Now a friend of mine said Mount Rainier is added through a Firmware upgrade and so I should buy the AOpen. Now my Question is: Is Mt Ranier only a software addon or is it hardware-sided? And which of these cd-rw should I Buy? ![]() Plz Help! CU Zwiwebel

Most people here would prefer Plextor or LiteOn. It all depends on what you want to use the writer for, for backing up games or audio.

No Mount Rainier support in de Plextor. Only the Lite-On 40sp writer does support Mount Rainier. Don't know if Mount Rainier support can be added to a writer by upgrading the firmware.

| I believe the Plextor PX-W4010A will have Mount Rainier support with a firmware upgrade (I read that at CDR-Info.com I believe). I have the Mitsumi CR-480ATE here which already supports it but unfortunately there's no software available that I know of...

I'm not sure if you can use firmware to get Mt. Rainier support, unless the drive has the general hardware already in place. Don't quote me on that though. The Liteon LTR40125S does have Mt Rainier built in and I've seen it on Pricewatch for $115+s&h. Liteon burners are always top notch.

I don't know about that particular drive, but AOpen as a whole is a relatively good company. I had one of their drives until a CD-R exploded in it, through no fault of it's own (In fact, it was my first non-working CD )

Yes, I have read that Mt. Rainier support will be added to the Plex 40x with a firmware upgrade. Another question, what's the difference between Mt. Rainier & HP Fast Format. I feel that both address the same issues of fast formating in about 5 mins. I asked this question in the forum but, no answer.

darshanjog HP Fast Format is a feature that works with UDF 1.5 packet writing software like InCD and DirectCD. It doesn't format any faster than other methods, but the CD-RW can start to be written while the formatting continues in the background until completed. The "fast" part is that a user can begin using the CD-RW after about 5 minutes rather than waiting for the full format to be completed. Mt. Rainier is a completely different writing protocol which uses hardware error control as opposed to software control used by packet writing software. The writing protocol is designed to be embedded in an operating system so that no special software will be required to operate drag & drop to CD-RW. If supported by an operating system it will also be transparently transportable to different computers. Mt. Rainer also formats in the background, but writing can begin in seconds.

I will definately consider Mt. Rainier feature in future when I will buy a new burner. You can have a look at my post: http://www.cdfreaks.com/forum/showth...threadid=41649 Can Mt. Rainier formated CD-RWs be read in CD-ROM drives even if the formatting is not complete?

Thanx for the help guys. I'm buy the AOpen tomorrow, because it's the cheapest and worth all it's money, I think. The Plex is a bit expensive too me and the Lite, oh i do think the Lite is good but i don't want to buy a Lite because it got no long time quality. Again thanx for your help!
