Liteon 5005 USA (NTSC) to UK (PAL)

I purchased a Liteon 5005 here in the USA (after I noticed they were available and used in the UK) and shipped it to my father in the UK. My idea was for him to record TV programs (in the UK) for me to watch in the USA. I had successfully unlocked the machine prior to shipping. Having received the unit my father thinks that this one is only capable of recording an NTSC signal ie it only has an NTSC tuner onboard. Does anyone know how we can convert the unit (firmware, using the A/V input etc..) to allow him to record PAL TV ?
Any ideas gratefully received!

Your not the first, videohelp.com had this tidbit sent in by a user who emailed liteon. Liteon said of the 5005 and 5045:

Both units record only on NTSC if you get the in the U.S.
I'm sure you could send him a PAL/NTSC converter, have a google round and look for one thats well reviewed.

Re: Liteon 5005 USA (NTSC) to UK (PAL)

Thanks for the information. Just to be clear, I don't think an NTSC/PAL converter is what I need - for example, I can connect my PAL video camera into AV1 on the 5005 and record the signal from the camera onto a DVD in the 5005 and at the same time, I can view the picture (and sound) simultaneously on my NTSC TV (as the output on the 5005 player is set to NTSC). I believe my problem is the apparent lack of an NTSC tuner in the 5005. Unless I there is some way to "unlock" or "activate" a PAL tuner (if that is possible) then I believe the only way forward will be for my father to take a signal (ie from a separate tuner, eg VCR) into the AV1. Whilst this will work, it will mean that he cannot set the channel number/timed recording option on the 5005.

The signal from your Video camera is different to a broadcast signal. A film camera captures the entire frame of a picture in a single instant. Whether PAL or NTSC based via an AV input the recorder will see it as a simple stream. In the case of broadcast images, the images must be broken up and transmitted as a series of lines, one after the other. They are broadcast in PAL, NTSC or SECAM format. Your recorder only receives/displays correctly NTSC broadcast images. Naturally it wont pick up/display PAL broadcast images.(no PAL Tuner)

Obviously the VCR is PAL/NTSC, so it acts as a converter would. A converter would eliminate the channel number/timed recording setting problem.

Liteon 5005 can record PAL and NTSC. if you want to record PAL TV signals(UK, India Australia etc) with a LIteon 5005 from USA(which has only NTSC tuner) - use a VCR in between . Use the VCR PAL tuner (input) and from use the Video and Audio output signal of the VCR to connect to the Liteon
