| I've been reading along for years - long ago, some of our computer staff were occasional contributors in the days when CD-RWs were first appearing. Then, CDFreaks was the best, fastest and most reliable sites for firmware updates (YAMAHAs with Mastering capabilities - wheeee). Lately, I've just wanted to rage against SATA "pedestals" on motherboards, and reviewers who give anything above a FAIL when CPU coolers refuse to allow users access to all of their RAM slots. Why should a *($%&($ cpu-cooler dictate what a user can or can't install on a motherboard, his software usage levels, etc?!! I also want to rage against case-designers who obviously don't build PCs in their own cases, or they'd find ample reasons to add another inch of width between motherboard-trays and drive-racks inside. Or push the motherboard tray back an inch or so. We live in Austin most of the time, but also just north of Prince George, BC. And have offices in Manhattan and LA for those customers. We used to build 1500 PCs a year for our customers (audio, recording studios, networks, server farms) but after the floods hit Thailand, we're still on a wait-and-see mode, only pushing out 400 in the last 10 months. Drive prices are still just too high... finally I saw some desktop 2Tbs for $99, but the 3Tbs SASs are still almost twice the price from last August's. I can only wonder where "West Texas" means. I hope it's "San Angelo or West", and not north-central like Ft Worth. Balmorhea? Alpine? Maybe living out of the Gage Hotel in Marathon? (If that's where you mean, give us about 8 seconds notice, and we'll join you. Absolutely nothing to do but walk. Spend a week, feels like a year.) I can't decide between San Antonio's Ochoa Park (nice bike racing and some great nearby cafes) or Brackenridge - it's got the train and zoo. |

| Kerry, great. REAL West Texas, then! We visit Monahans (no no, not the dunes - we're still getting sand outta clothes and the car) and Pecos in July-Aug to run off with as many cantelopes as we can carry back. Pals of yours should be beggin' for your mailing services for those things, or else invites in exchange for their cranking the ice-cream buckets for a while.) We used to race bikes from Big Bend thru FS to Pecos up to Carlsbad. Leave about midnight and about 9 am, there'd be a killer tail-wind blowing us northward. Great fun. Of course, we had to trick some folks to come and pick us up, because we'd never want to ride back against that wind! I can't remember where the mall is at on the north of town. 42nd Street? There used to be this hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint on either Golder or Grant (er Andrews Hwy) as we left downtown, heading north towards that mall's big street. I just can't remember. Great sauce, great sausage. We also have pals up in Seminole and Lamesa, too, although we usually are headed for Balmorhea or Marfa, sometimes Presidio. Another hideaway for us. (Oops, was just nudged... maybe the BBQ place was further west, on Moss. Ah well...it's been 6 years since that trip.) |
