I'm having a very strange problem

Newbie Forum Discuss, I'm having a very strange problem at Community forum; I've burned a few .avi files that a) played great when I opened them from the hard drive and played them with Windows Media Player, b) play great when I put the freshly made Cd into the burner and played it (just to check and see if the burn "took"

I've burned a few .avi files that a) played great when I opened them from the hard drive and played them with Windows Media Player, b) play great when I put the freshly made Cd into the burner and played it (just to check and see if the burn "took" BUT.........when I put the Cd into my brand new Philips DVP 642 dvd player (which handles DivX just fine), the picture is like a bad acid trip. Everything except the sound is just erratics and a jumble of crazy colors surrounding the images. What am I doing wrong? TIA.

Perhaps you should use better quality CD-R media & burn slower , say at 16-24x.

Thanks Tim. I did a reburn immediately after the first one at 16x and it was just as bad. The Cd's are Sony CD-R; can't vouch for their quality but they've worked well on other burns (mp3s, divx files). I'm really stumped. The standalone player is fine too. It plays everything else just fine so that's not the problem. Should I be converting the .avi or .afi files to something else first? Thanks for your help.

There is a "quirk" with the 642 that might help you here. I have noticed particularly with xvid files, not so much with actual divx files, and the problem I have seen is alot of pixelation. What I read about and have tried successfully is to start to play the movie, then go into the setup of the 642, then click on the video portion, and then exit the menu. I have only had to do this about 6 times, and it worked every time. I may not be getting the exact directions right, I apologize, I cannot find those old instructions anywhere. Hope this helps.

Thanks pacmac, I apologise for not answering sooner...was out of town. That sounds like a very feasible answer to the problem and I'll fiddle with it and report back after work today. I think all standalone players have their quirks and oddities, and there are usually work arounds like the one you mention. Cheers.
