HP-DV5000 Recue Cd's Have No Drivers

Hello,
Just ran across this site while searching Google for info on getting drivers on a cd from one computer with internet (desktop) to the troubled DV5000 laptop with NO drivers installed and obviously no internet. I just can't find a site to just install on a cd to use to install on the laptop with no access. Any help is appreciated!

Just put your drivers on a usb stick.

I'd recommend installing the NIC (Network Interface Card) driver, then reboot, then connect the machine to the internet and use Windows update to do (most) of the rest.

You can find the DV5000 drivers right here.

You can also copy/paste the hardware id of your network device (possibly Ethernet controller with a Yellow question mark inside device manager) into Google. It will find your necessary driver. Put it on a usb stick and install it on your DV5000.

WTH indeed... here's an HP site with lists of downloadable files for the HP DV5000. This displayed page has XP drivers but, at the top, you can re-select for Vista drivers.

Normally, "Chipset" is the first driver to be installed after the OS is run, then "Graphics" then "Video-Monitor".

The rest - Network, Audio, Modem - can be installed in any order. If one of these oversteps another (sometimes AMD HD Audio can step on Video and later AMD updates can solve this), they are only temporary.

"Storage" contains drivers for the Memory Card slots, by the way.

(Mr.B was typing as I was!)

I always hate working on HP Computers because they've got a long history of "Model Number" being displayed and the critical "sub-model numbers" hidden away somewhere on motherboards, inside certain case panels - encrypted, jeez, I don't know where or why. You'd think a clear, easy Model Number would be considered "highly useful" for a brand-name computer.

And here's one that seems to actually do that - and then it doesn't include drivers on the Rescue Disk?!!

The Roseanne Roseanna Danna School Of Philosophy. This is why I hated HP buying Compaq.

But at least this model seems to take "Only one model number needed!" approach. Whew... I wonder how much junk software is loaded on that Rescue Disk, too? "For another $50, here's the Clean Disk version without that stuff..."

Rescue discs usually suck.

Old drivers, stupid interface, bloatware. I rather put the hardware id in google, find out the original vendor, get the latest driver and put it on a usb stick. Since Windows Update mostly finds all other hardware, you only need the wifi/ethernet driver for internet connection.

If you need W7/Vista drivers, try here.

What a pleasant surprise to have four replies in 30 minutes of posting. I had the drivers page but I couldn't save them to cd. I will try using my usb. I will also try the NIC card deal as well! Will let you know!

Thx for the reply. I put the drivers in order onto the laptop and the graphics changed to a nicer smaller font size so that did something but nothing else seems to work. Device manager show's all yellow ?????'s. No sound......I rebooted to no avail. I installed them all but I am unable to locate the drivers download location. Any idea's now???

Did you manage to install your network driver?
Did you manage to connect to the internet on this machine?
If yes, then go to windowsupdate.com and have it find out the rest.

I have the Network (1394 Net Adapter) installed but yellow on audio, ethernet, Mass Storage Controller, Modem Device on High Def Audio Bus, amd Network Controller.
No internet!!!
I have been on the computer about 20 years and this is where I know very little about. I upgrade ram (big deal), change harddrive (big deal), minor diagnostic's and repair, but I am like someone not afraid of heights and can't figure how to climb it!

I just did a search of the files and found two of two "sp.exe files". My drivers were only in the prefetch.......theres the problem.

I should have recommended "install one driver at a time and re-start PC" each time.

Download locations... I create a DOWNLOAD folder.

If you want to make sure this is located at the alphabetic "top" of any listing, spell it with an underscore, like

_Download

Now, it will be easier to find. Next, when you download drivers and select SAVE, try to "browse" out to this _Download folder.

You can also give each downloaded file a name-prefix, like "1_SP35..." or "2_SP..." so it's a bit easier to identify the Install Order.

For now, however, let's try an easier notion. (You have not done any permanent damage - nor will any of these processes - so don't worry about that.)

In DEVICE MANAGER, locate any of those Yellow Exclaimed items (for example, the Network Adapter) and delete it. This is a "Driver Uninstall" process, you are not 'deleting' the hardware - just it's entry on the Device Manager listing.

Now, do a Shutdown-Restart and log in. Wait for a few moments, and Windows SHOULD "found new hardware" and ask if you want it to install drivers "automatically." Sure. Let's see what happens.

(Even if it fails, you're no worse off. Er, and no better off, darn...)

You might try to do a SEARCH on those SP___.EXE files and move them to that Download folder. Or else re-download them separately and give them some Numeric-Sequence-Prefix name for easier ordered installs.

Then, start over and, after you install each one, do a Shutdown Restart and let's see what happens.

If this all fails to provide progress, then we're looking at a Windows Update procedure. It is likely that the drivers are needing FRAMEWORK 2.5's installation. I think that's the correct one. I'll locate that and see if I can't post a link in a REPLY.

Oh, can you tell us which Windows flavor you have? If it's XP, does it show XP only, XP SP1 or XP SP2?

(If it's XP Only, then we've got some other issues to deal with - downloading and installing SP1 will be the first step.)

If it's Vista, then you should be CLOSE to being up-to-date from the Rescue Disk alone.

Here's a link to the Microsoft NET Framework 2.0 Redistributable. I know this would be downloaded during Windows Update processes later on, but it might help with Driver Installs.

Here's the link to Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, the full-package. This too would be eventually installed during a Windows Update, but maybe the drivers are expecting this one, if not 2.0.

Hopefully, neither of these Framework installs were needed for your successful installation.

The Network Adapter - not the (1394) one - is going to be a big help because, as another poster wrote, once you get that installed, then you should have Internet and Windows Update can be run after that. Probably for hours, by the way!

Ah yes, your 1394 Network Adapter is actually your FireWire (IEEE 1394) card. It can have a network, but it's never going to connect to the internet.

You will need the ethernet card driver if you are using a cable to connect to the internet.

WTH, the Framework suggestions are my lame guesses at what version of Windows the computer has installed on it. If this was a first-version of WinXP, then those Framework products PLUS WinXP-SP1 and maybe SP2 might be necessary to install first before any driver works.

I would have hoped that the Rescue Disk plus the website's drivers would have cooperated, though. HP Computers always leave me head-shaking, though, wishing I could post a big sign in the sky, "Buy their printers but NEVER buy their computers!"

I'll try to check in about 5 hours from now and wish you best-success.

HP's tend to be a little bit better than Dell computers, but only if you use them for company purposes.

For a gaming rig or a specialised custom desktop you're way better off building your own or a special brand like AlienWare or DogHouseSystems. I am aware AlienWare is now property of Dell.

Not really on topic, since the DV5000 series is a bit.. old..
