Hello! I admittedly join this group completely unknowledgable and unskilled in the ways of editing video, so any advice that you'd care to share would be extremely appreciated. And when sharing, please assume I know as little as possible.

Here's my situation: I am in the process of having over 50 years worth of home movie footage (8mm & video) converted to DVD for preservation. What I'd like to do is take the material from these DVDs, edit it down a bit, and create more of a polished movie to be shared with friends and family (adding in some music/audio overlays, maybe inserting some text "slides?" in). I've shearched the posts here, and tried downloading some of the suggested programs but I'm lost right now.

Right now, I've got the files from one of the DVDs copied onto my computer's hard drive (one of them is a large .VOB? file) and I can't seem to do anything with them. All the programs I'm downloading appear to want to capture the video from an external source, and don't appear to be able to recognize the format the DVD files on my computer are already in. Can anyone advise me on how to proceed from here?

Thanks!

Terra

VOB files are just encased MPEG files. I dont think theres any programs that let you do edit VOB files. I might be wrong.

The thing I always do to Edit DVDs is to rip the DVD files as Elementry (sp?) files on to the hard drive (seperate video and audio files) using DVD Decrypter and then I multiplex (join) them back together as MPEG files using TMPGENC. Once you have an MPEG file you can Edit it in any Video Editor. Heres the steps I follow:

DVD Decrypter

1) Insert DVD and click on 'Mode'
2) From the drop down menu select 'IFO'
3) On the right you should have a Tab with 'Input' and another 'Stream Processing' Select 'Stream Processing'
4) Then click on 'Enable Stream Processing'
5) Highlight the first file which should be Video and then click on 'Demux'
6) Highlight the second file which should be Audio and then click on 'Demux'
7) Click on 'Tools' from the top menu and select 'Settings' from drop down menu.
8) From the next window select the tab 'IFO Mode'
9) In the options section of this window there should be a drop down menu for 'File Splitting'. From this Select 'None' and click OK.
10) Now your ready to Rip the DVD. Once done you should have a seperate video file (M2V) and audio file (AC3, MP2, MPA - depends what audio you had) on your hard drive. You need to multiplex these to convert to MPEG.

TMPGenc

1) Run TMPGENC and close the Project wizard.
2) Click on File and select 'MPEG Tools'
3) In the next window select the tab 'Simple Multiplex'
4) In the 'Type' drop down menu select ' MPEG-2 Program (VBR)
5) In the Video and Audio part browse for the files you just ripped using DVD Decrypter (M2V for video)
6) Then select output and Run. This will create your MPEG file which you can the Edit in any Editing program.

This is usually how I do it but if there might be other easier ways to do this.

Asid,
it took me a few days to get the time to go through the steps you listed in your post, but I have to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Your post was spot on for what I needed to do to get my files into MPEG format. As Bronco suggested in his reply to my original post, I am using Window Movie Maker as my editor. Now that the program is recognizing the files (because they're in MPEG format), it's telling me that I'm missing a codec needed to play the file. I'm going to see if I can find an update online (anybody know where I can get this?), but I just wanted to thank you again for getting me on the way. I'd never have been able to get this far without your great directions!!!

Do you have a software DVD player installed on your PC? Did you try to play the MPEG file with Windows Media player? If you have a software DVD player then you should be able to play MPEG 2 files on your Computer using Windows Media Player.

You could try this MPEG decoder and see if it helps

What's the missing codec? - be more specific! If u play in WMP9 it usually will download missing codecs automatically provided it is checked in the player's options.

Bronco-

I am able to play the file on WMP9 (and I also verified that the "download codecs automatically" option was checked), however, when I go to the "import video option" in WMM2.1, and select my video file, I get the following message:
The file C:\Documents and Settings\Terra\Desktop\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1 - 0xE0 - Video - MPEG-2 - 720x480 (NTSC) - 4~3.mpg cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Terra

Bronco,
Had to say thank you!!! The encoder in your link did the trick. I'm in WMM right now about to finish up my first movie. Couldn't have done it without your (and Asid's!) help. Thanks so much!!!!

I used the above tutorial for decrypting and converting my dvd to mpeg via the tmpg program. I can play the movie in windows media player, but I cannot import the audio to my software program. I am using dvd decrypter, tmpg-with appropiate settings, and vegas 5,3, & ulead. The video gets imported but not the audio. Does this work with dolby digital dvd's? What setting do I have wrong? On the dvd decrypter I only decrypted the 5.1 english audio, do I need to decrypt all audio, even 2 channel?
Thanks

Hi Guy's.

I've Tried This Method And I Think It Best Method, If You Have *.VOB's.!
One Problem I Do Get, Nothing Major, When The Output *.MPG Movie Is Finished The Movie Runs Fine VIDEO & AUDIO Are Syncronized.!

Now And Again I Get A Small Blocky Picture For A Second And Back To Normal.!

Is There A Way To Avoid That.!

I have another different issue - when i use tmpc (or whatever its called...) it has great video but no sound and when i point it to the folder it tells me that "The selected DVD contians an audio track that cannot be decoded etc. the decodable audio formats are MPEG-Audio, Linear PCM"

Is there a way around this? I am using DVD Fab Decrypter as my decoder

Also when i rip a DVD there is nothing in the AUDIO_TS folder?

I am not a very technical person about making movies, all I know is that I am a mom with a lot of memories on VHS and Tapes from my old camcorder, I have a multimeda computer, Any idea what I need to do to be able to preserve this memories on DVDs and share this memories with other members of the family?
