How do I convert a DVD to AVI or DivX?

Hi all, I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to DVDs and changing formats etc, but basically I have a DVD (recording from the TV) which has been saved in the usual format of 2 directories (Video RM and Video TS). I want to change it to become one single file e.g. an AVI or DivX one but have no idea how to go about this. I'm disabled and tend to live upstairs on my PC more than downstairs in my living room, hence my desire to have it in a smaller format to keep on my PC.

Is it possible and/or does it require a software layout or is there free software available that might do the job?

THanks for that suggestion - have tried it, but run into problems I can't find a fix for easily and their forum insists you have to be registered for 5 days before you can post so not much use. Basically the sound is like Donald Duck on nitrous oxide! Runs so fast you can't hear a thing. I've tried changing all sorts of settings, but couldn't find anything that made any difference. Checked their manual but that didn't throw up any ideas either.

Just redubbing it as a single file in case that might make a difference, as currently it's in 4 sections because I didn't want the Ads included.

Can but keep trying perhaps

There are a lot of different converters available. AviDemux can do simple editing and convert to xvid avi for you. Free to use.

Thanks for that Kerry - just wasn't sure how easy they were to find or how easy the task might be to do as my previous searches hadn't providing me much (always the problem with searches!).

I'll go and try out a couple more and see if I've any more joy as it's beginning to frustrate me - fine on getting it to run ok, but just struggling to figure out the vast array of audio options. But best way to learn is to just dive in and see what happens. Appreciate the input and feedback. Thanks.
