Help, can't play a dvd on my pc.

I have shop bought dvd paul simon graceland.
It will not play on my LG dvd burner, had no problems with any other disc's
have tried on other pc's (4) with diffrent burners etc, same results.

Error message from power dvd is disc with unsupported format.

Error message from dvd decrypter is Device not ready(logical unit not ready.
cause not reportable)

The disc will play on std. TV type dvd players (tried in 4 types) plays without any trouble.

Cheers

Re: Help, can't play a dvd on my pc.

There seems to be some new encryption on DVDs which were just released. Try "The Immortals" or "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" I couldn't get The Immortals to play on my Mac w/o it being ejected. Msn Impossible I can play, but my rippers won't work w/o crashing.

What software are you using for playback? [Edit: Removed suggestion for software.]

As for the encryption, that is not uncommon. The studios keep on putting new types of protection on their disks, hoping to keep people from ripping them while they are still new to the market. I don't believe they expect any encryption on dvds to last very long. If your current decrypter isn't working for you, you'll just have to wait until an update is released. Or keep a Windows machine around just for this purpose. AnyDVD and DVDFab are usually updated within days of new encryption scheme releases.

Thank you so much for answering - these forums are one of the great things about the internet. One of these days, I'll just have to save some $$ and get a Windows OS to run on my Mac since I have some applications I'd like to be able to use again. Especially thank you for letting me know that AnyDVD and DVDFab are fast to respond to the new schemes! I was trying to find a new app to do this! Personally, it would be fun to learn how to or how to help actually accomplish (me scientist/engineer sofware application work for my adult career but they were all higher level things except for a few times I dove down into assembler <grin>).

Again, thanks for the great reply!

As far as I'm aware there isn't a Mac version of AnyDVD but there is certainly a Mac version of DVDFab which you may be interested in.

We're environmentally friendly here, the thread is being recycled!

Plus it's a new query.

Re: Help, can't play a dvd on my pc.

Some of the paid software I am using doesn't have any issues with the new encryption. I have noticed some weird coding though that I can't help but think might be some kind of tracking mechanism.

Most movie backup software contains routines that connect online for various reasons which may include the following:-
  • Checking for updates to the main program.
  • Downloading program updates for the main program.
  • Checking for decryption updates.
  • Downloading new decryption updates.
  • Some programs now use online decryption for the latest titles
  • Blu-ray decrypters in particular sometimes access their decryption codes remotely.

Almost all professional backup software contains some form of online checking so it's quite normal for such programs to include components that access the Internet.

Oh and welcome to the forums by the way.
