Hard Drive Access problem I am using Windows 2000. I tried to refuse "every one" to access my C: by right click on C: and select "property". I changed the security setting so that "every one" can not access C:. Then I tried rebooting my PC and, of course it failed. How can I make C: accessible without lossing data on C:? I tried to install my "unaccessible" hard drive as a "primary slave" hard drive into another PC running Windows 2000. But Windows 2000 does not show any sign of this installed "primary slave" hard drive. (I think my "unaccessible" hard drive was correctly installed as a "primary slave" hard drive. The original hard drive is the "primary master" drive and it works well with Windows 2000). Am I on the right track in solving this problem? Any other solutions? Please also send your solutions to my email bestune@netzero.net. Your help will be very much appreciated!!! Wood Head

Did you have a look at disk manager? You could also try install on this drive the Windows XP console as an alternative OS (winnt32 /cmdcons) or simply boot with XP CDrom. But you must know the CACLS command syntax

Just a question. When you tried to access the drive in the 2nd PC, did you change the jumper on the back of the hard drive to make sure it was set to a "slave" setting? It'll depend on the brand of the drive as to the individual jumper setting required,(eg:Seagate drives you remove the jumper to configure it as a slave device)

Dear vrac: (1) I don't know if Windows 2000 have "disk manager" as you mentioned. However I will try to find it. (2) Sorry I don't have Windows XP. I did try re-install Windows 2000. But since I simply could not access this drive, I failed to install Windows 2000. I guess I would have similar problem if I try installing XP. Dear Mr Phooey: Yes. It was correctly set as a "primary slave" drive. When I reboot the "two hard drive" PC, the drive information displayed twice. The first display shows the working hard drive as "primary master drive", and the installed unaccessible hard drive as "primary slave". The second display is a table. But this time no sign of the installed unaccessible hard drive: it only shows the working hard drive as primary master drive. Any further help will be appreciated. Wood Head

You could try logging in as administrator in safe mode, that should give you access to everything.

I tried all the methods you suggested, but all failed. Actually I have been helping others to solve this problem. It is not convenient for me to try again and agian. So if someone can actually repeat what I have done (i.e., right click the C: drive and select the "property", then click the "Security" tab and make your C: unaccessible to "everyone" and reboot your PC. And if you solve the problem, please tell me how), that can really help. Wood Head

When you tried the drive as a Primary slave, did you check to see if it appeared in the motherboard BIOS settingsas a device? Just making sure it's actually being properly seen as a device first, (before even thinking of Windows),thats all.
