Good CD burning software for Windows XP?

| I am specifically looking for a good software program (preferably something I can obtain directly from a store like CompUSA, Circuit City or someplace similar rather than download because all I have is a dialup modem - it's a long story why I don't have something faster) for burning CD's. I'm looking for using it mainly for burning music on to CDR's. Two small features I need with such a program is 1) to be able to remove the standard 2-second gap normally placed between tracks and 2) to be able to normalize tracks before burning. I have a Sony Vaio medicenter computer running Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Previously I was using Nero 7 Ultra Edition but for the third time, the CD burning portion of the program refuses to load. The previous two times, I took the computer back where I purchased it (still under warranty) and they claimed it had a virus and did a full systems restore. I doubted the virus story then and am not taking it back in again. But I've had it with Nero. Most all the programs dealing with CD burning are refusing to load while other programs within the pack dealing with DVD's load fine. I tried Nero support but had issues with their website not working the way it was supposed to plus to download the upgrade would take much longer than the 30 minutes allowed according to their website. So to make a long story short, I'm dumping Nero 7 Ultra and looking into getting new CD burning software. I need recommendations. One I'm looking at as a possibility is Roxio's Easy CD & DVD Burning but I've read some people have problems with it not working on Windows XP operating systems. Anyway any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me or leave the suggestions in the forum. |

| Give Burrrn a try. It's a great little proggy (it's very small, so dialup shouldn't pose a problem). I know it can normalise tracks, but as I've never tried to remove the 2 second gap with it, I couldn't tell you if it does that. It's free though. ![]() My neighbour uses Roxio (v7.something) on XP, works fine, so that's another good option.

| Just a thought. You spent a lot of money on Nero and there have been problems but the updates properly installed seem to have fixed the problems (use Nero clean uninstall and start over with the TRIAL version. Then, insert you registration number which makes it a full retail copy. The trial version is probably a 6 hr. download which is nuts. If you have someone with high-speed near you, they can download it for you. If you can't get someone to bail you out locally, I can mail a CD to you (no charge). CDFreaks has a good Nero website. I wouldn't give up on the program. |
| Jeff, I don't have anyone who could bail me out locally. If you would email me (saints@nettally.com), I can give you my snail-mail addy to send me the upgrade on CD. I really appreciate it. |
| One other quick question, where can I find "Nero clean uninstall" within the StartSmart menu? |
| Jeff, one other question (I keep coming up with these after I post a prior one)...I have the purchased version already on CD. Would I have to download the TRIAL version from Nero? How large of a file is that? It might take too long for me to download. Would a reinstall from CD with the upgrades in-hand work too? |
| Uninstall Nero from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Then go here and download (it's small) and run the General Clean Tool. That should sort you out, helped for me when a Nero 7 update screwed my install.

| I already e-mailed that I have your address and I will include the 3 files you need (cleantool utility 648K zipped, help file 23mb & the trial version 125mb). I also included info to contact Nero and ask for the no charge serial number for the Lame Encoder which does a nice job when you are ripping/converting audio files. Remember that once you add your serial number to the trial version, it becomes a full functioning program. The cleantool utility is a separate program and is not accessed through NeroStartSmart.
