Free software aims to improve headphone sound quality

A Dutch developer is working on software that tries to improve sound with headphones. The software intends to improve the sound quality of music when using headphones, according to the developer this results "in the sound experience as meant by the mixer". The free tool called DVDtoHP is currently available for Linux, Windows and Mac and is work in progress.

According to the developer most music is mixed with the intention that the user listens to it through speakers, "In fact a normal stereo recording shouldn't be listen-able with a headphone. Sound are delivered totally independent to the ears, in normal situations only happening when a bee is buzzing in one of your ears."

And he goes on to explain his tool, "DVDtoHP simulates an artificial head recording. Sound from a left channel reaches first the left ear and with a delay it also reaches the right ear. Higher frequencies muffled more than lower frequencies. This is simulated by deliver the signal from the left sight filtered and delayed to the right sight and visa versa. The rear and front channels get a different delay and filter. The rear channels get a longer delay and are more muffled than the front channels."

More information about the software can be found on the website of the developer here.
