Hi All,
This is going to look long but I wanted to make sure readers would know as much as possible about my scenario.
So after having wasted quite a handful of DVD +R DL disks that failed to burn on my Philips DVD8701 that came in my Dell XPS 600, I started researching the problem. The short version of the story I discovered was the 8701 was actually a BenQ 1640. Everyone having problems with their Philips drives seemed to own a Dell. Cross Flashing to change the 8701 to a 1640 appeared to solve the burn problems. So I downloaded WinDWFlash, 1640bsgb CVT and proceeded to flash my drive. It suceeded. I then grabbed the latest version of the 1640 firmware i could find, BSRB, and updated the drive, again with success.
Now for my new problems.
The drive will not seem to recognize any blank media. I have tried DVD +R DL, DVD +R and CD-R. When scanning the media after it is inserted the drive never recovers and the led on the front bezel remains lit.
I have tried to use Qsuite to see if I could discover anything but it wouldn't work because the drive never could activate after the media was inserted.
I also reflashed back to the BSGB version and tried again but the results were the same.
Also, DVDInfoPro sees the drive as a BenQ 1640.
So I went from a drive that would burn DVD +R moderately well (by the way I am not a burn speed fanatic, I just want to be able to back up my DVD's onto a DL blank disc at reasonable speeds) to a drive that appears to not work at all.
Can ANYONE shed some light on what I should try next... PLEASE!

Thanks
Andy
