dvd recorder won't record (Samsung DVD V9800 - DVD/VCR combo)

Hi!
My dvd recorder which I have had for a few years now has decided to no longer record or erase any of the discs it has previously recorded on with no problems, and will no longer record on or even initialise new discs claiming they can't be read! For a long time it has been refusing to play hired or bought dics either forcing me to play them on the playstation, thus proving there is nothing wrong with the disc.
Is there anything I can try to solve it before I throw it out?
I would appreciate any advise
Thanks

Re: dvd recorder won't record

If there are smokers in the house or if the unit is close to the kitchen the lens can dirty quickly.

Re: dvd recorder won't record

No smokers in the house but it is in the next room to the kitchen.

I bought a Philips lens cleaning kit with a cd with 2 brushes, dvd player says the disc can't be played! It played it once and I went through the cleaning, I then put a newly cleaned dvd in and it let me erase 1 or 2 things then it started acting up again. I put the cleaning disc back in and it wouldn't play - I tried it 15 - 20 times! Help!

Re: dvd recorder won't record

Time to open the case then open the top cover of the drive and gently clean the lens with a Q-Tip and a little alcohol.

Re: dvd recorder won't record

Buy a can of compressed air and blow it in the DVD player when the DVD door is open

Is isoprophyl alcohol the stuff that comes in the kit to clean the actual dvd itself?

Re: dvd recorder won't record

I use 100% alcohol to clean just did it on a DVD VCR combo unit and now it is reading a recording just fine.
I have to remove 11 screws it took about 15 mins.

Re: dvd recorder won't record

I don't think its possible to buy 100% alcohol in Ireland - They are probably afraid we will drink it! I tried to buy it to dilute perfume oils I bought in Egypt and they told me in the shop that it is unavailable.
I will find something though.

No it is not the alcohol you can drink I use the kind they sell in a hardware store but rubbing alcohol should also work (it is 70% alcohol and 30% water).
I use the 100% in a portable camp stove (as the water is not good for burning).

drinking alcohol is ethanol
the other alcohol is methanol

A good quality camera lens cleaning solution should also work.

Re: dvd recorder won't record

I cleaned the lens but it still won't record/erase anything.
But it will play the cleaning dvd! Is it time to give up?
Can I replace the disc drive? The vcr part still works perfectly so I don't want to throw it out if I can fix it.

I would buy a DVR + a DVD recorder I have 2 and find them flexable and work very well together, and better if you want to convert VHS to DVD. VHS is dead and once you convert you last tape to DVD you will not use VHS again.
IMO combo units were a scam many people thought it was the way to convert all their old tapes to DVD then found out the problems with copy protection.
People who thought units with HDD was the solution found they had copy problems also.

Re: dvd recorder won't record

VHS will never die in my house. My partner uses nothing else for recording. He stayed with the tapes when I bought the combi recorder and now he's been proved right as he sits there smugly while I rant, rave scream and dismantle the unit.
So another combi unit it is then.

Thanks for all the advise.
