| Hi everyone. I'm a newbie here of course, but i'm a fairly good computer user. Usually i just surf the net for these fourms to find solutions to my problem, but this is the first time (and i've solved quite a bit) where i have actually had to post. HEre is the deal. I have an HP Pavillion TX1000 with built in DVD DL burner. (see log below for model etc) I have burned countless DVD+R and CD-R but only recently have tried to burn Dual Layer Media. I bought.. and i know i'm going to get $h!! for this... Memorex DVD+R DL discs. I know they arn't the best, but i figured if i slowed the write speed down, it would lower my chance for a burn error. Well it didn't even get that far... as soon as it starts to burn.. it gives me an unknown error.. says the disc at once feature could not start.. and quits. I use Nero 7 Ultra.. but have tried to just burn a small file via Vista burn software just to see if it was nero.. and its not.. even windows can't burn.. nor can roxio.. nor can anything else i've tried. I scoured the net to try to find a solution but can't find a post that is specific to my problem.. some similar, but nothing that i tried worked.. so i'm throwing it out there to the cool geeks that love to solve problems. When i just try to use nero to tell me what kind of disc i have..it reads it as a DVD+R DL with no problem and windows even pops up asking what iw ant to do with blank media. As far as trouble shooting : First off i've tried the following Over 15 of the 50 pack of disc.. all with the same result.. it won't even try to burn.. it just fails. I tired uninstalling and reinstalling drivers I tried rebooting just to make sure it wasn't a one time fluke i've tried Windows, Nero and Roxio to burn the disc I've beat my head for hours and pissed off my girl friend trying to solve the problem For the purposes of the log, it is trying to burn a disc image of a DVD i imaged. I have tried with other files with no luck.. so file itself is not the cause.... Thanks for the help, and just ask if you need more info.... i have copied the log file that nero gives me so maybe that will help. | Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST) Your drive doesn't like these disks. Have you updated to the latest firmware for your drive? You'll need to look at the HP site for their firmware revisions. Next off, you bought the wrong disks. Period. The only consistent dual layer disks that are available now are made by Mitsubishi and sold under the Verbatim brand. I don't recommend using Nero for burning dual layer disks. To set the layer break correctly you should use a free burning program called ImgBurn. Look through the guides at the ImgBurn forum on how to burn a dvd movie or data to a DL disk. http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showforum=4 I rather doubt you'll have much luck with these Memorex dual layer disks. My advice is to return them, and show them the failed burns as well if they need proof. You can buy Verbatim DL locally ( I get them from Best Buy) or online at shops like rima.com or supermediastore.com |
| Thanks for your response.. much appreciated... i couldn't find a firmware update on HP's site. i went to their drivers and downloads page and found nothing.. also searched for the model via Google and couldn't find a firmware update. I think i probably will return the discs to amazon and buy verbatim.. i was warned based on reviews... it just seemed like such a waste of money.. but now i'm seeing the truth.. still open to other suggestions.... also if you know where the firmware update is i'd be quite thankful. |
| Didn't find an update for you. Your current drive is made by Lite-on, the type is shown in your posted log: Slimtype DVD A DS8A1H and the firmware in it now is WH66. That probably didn't tell you anything you didn't already know, but I did try. Don't have any more help for you than that, but someone else around here with more experience with the drive may chip in. |
| Thank you Kerry, I'll be on the lookout for additional posters... much appreciate your help |
| I am having an identical problem (see error log) I am running Vista and a slightly different computer. But the error and the type of discs I am using (memorex) is the same. I believe I have used this type of media before with no problems...why now? to the OP...did the media change solve your problem? @ everyone else.... any ideas? 6:32:08 AM #18 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 958 Prepare [G: Slimtype DVD A DS8A1H] for write in CUE-sheet-DAO DAO infos: ========== MCN: "" TOCType: 0x00; Session Closed, disc not fixated Tracks 1 to 1: Idx 0 Idx 1 Next Trk 1: TRM_DATA_MODE1, 2048/0x00, FilePos 0 0 7192903680, ISRC "" DAO layout: =========== ___Start_|____Track_|_Idx_|_CtrlAdr_|_____Size_|______NWA_|_RecDep__________ 0 | lead-in | 0 | 0x41 | 0 | 0 | 0x00 0 | 1 | 0 | 0x41 | 0 | 0 | 0x00 0 | 1 | 1 | 0x41 | 3512160 | 0 | 0x00 3512160 | lead-out | 1 | 0x41 | 0 | 0 | 0x00 6:32:08 AM #19 Text 0 File SCSIPTICommands.cpp, Line 240 SPTILockVolume - completed successfully for FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME 6:32:08 AM #20 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 4362 Caching options: cache CDRom or Network-Yes, small files-No (<64KB) 6:32:08 AM #21 Phase 24 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1767 Caching of files started 6:32:08 AM #22 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 4484 Cache writing successful. 6:32:08 AM #23 Phase 25 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1767 Caching of files completed 6:32:08 AM #24 Phase 36 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1767 Burn process started at 2.4x (3,324 KB/s) 6:32:09 AM #25 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 2675 Verifying disc position of item 0 (relocatable, disc pos, no patch infos, orig at #0): write at #0 6:32:09 AM #26 Text 0 File DVDPlusDualLayer.cpp, Line 1856 GetDriveCaps: LAST LBA of layer 1 is 1756287 6:32:10 AM #27 SPTI -1 File SCSIPassThrough.cpp, Line 215 CdRom0: SCSIStatus(x02) WinError(0) NeroError(-1) CDB Data: 0xBF 00 00 00 00 00 00 20 00 0C 00 00 Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST) Sense Code: 0x27 Sense Qual: 0x00 Sense Area: 0x70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 27 Buffer x05593280: Len xc 0x00 0A 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 1A CC 80 6:32:10 AM #28 Text 0 File DVDPlusDualLayer.cpp, Line 768 L0 Data Zone Capacity not set. | Hi Krispy and Welcome: As Kerry56 pointed out in the second post, you are using bad media. If they worked before, you were lucky. Additionally, even if the burn was successful, expect the media to degrade faster over time. You should also see if there is a firmware update. |
| Thanks for the quick reply. I have located some verbatim media and will be purchasing tomorrow. I was curious to know if the original poster's problem was solved by changing the media. For an extra clue in solving the problem: When I try to burn the DL-DVD with windows built in burning application, I get a "Unable to format disc" Error...Does this point to poor media as well? Thanks for the help! |
| I don't use Vista but I would suspect that if there is a firmware problem for the media used and/or the media is suspect, it could be the problem. Other Forum members who are familiar with Vista may want to jump in. My suspicion is that there is overwhelming support for specific applications (e.g. imgburn) that many members would avoid the built-in OS burning program (but I could be wrong). |
| Just to give an update... i got some Verbatim DVD DL and have had almost no errors.. sometimes the DVD sticks while playing a DL in my home DVD player, but most cases have been no problem... i'm happy to report about a 10:0 worked:wasted disc with Verbatim... hope it stays X:0 as X increases... |

Besides that, the ONLY reliable dual layer media is mitsubishi/verbatim. Of course, you know this, because the OP posted their results.

I don't think it is formatting in the common (format hard a drive) sense of the word. |
| In built windows software is packet writing, or perhaps just normal, troublesome, multisession writing. Don't use the inbuilt windows burning software. You have no control over what it's doing (writing speed?). Disable the inbuilt Disk Writing Service - in winxp it was called "Imapi CD Burning COM" service. Vista, I'm sure would be similar. If you just HAVE to use multisession, use imgburn instead - it's free, reliable & gives you complete control over what's happening to your discs.
