DVD Burner round-up: Top 16x drives tested

Well I
haven't seen any Top 16x drive reviews in a while but I saw this one and said
why not take a look. They've taken probably the best 3 and gave em the once over
and the results, that's for ya'll to decide.

As far
as king of the hill goes, the NEC drive lists the best performance
specifications from the manufacturer. However, if you take the benchmarks
under consideration, you have to be impressed with LG's low CPU
utilization. I don't know about you, but I am a pure breed multi-tasker,
and I put very high demands on my PC.

Last, but probably one of the most
important factors is price. The NEC drive has always been insanely cheap
online, with the LG currently being sold for a similar price. The Plextor
drive is obviously price structured by its reputation, but it is
remarkably higher than the others. One last consideration is appearance.
Judging by the types of cases manufacturers are currently selling, you can
tell appearance is now a driving force in the market. That being said, the
NEC drive looks generic, even withholding its own logo on the front. The
Plextor offering is the most versatile, with its dual face plates, and the
LG unit is quite sexy itself in
black.

After
completing this article, I firmly believe that DVD
recording technology has reached a plateau. And well, it was
certainly about time considering just months from now we will start seeing
new optical storage technology becoming available in the form of Sony's
supported Blu-ray or Toshiba's
HD-DVD.
