Drive intermittently dropping (Samsung SH-S203N / TS-H653N)

This thread is about the Samsung SH-S203N / TS-H653N. Click here to see full specs

Greetings,

Got a good one for ya...I purchased a Samsung SH-S203N Sata DVD about a year ago...Worked great till I built a new PC...I just built a new machine and the poop stain of a DVD writer intermittently drops in and out of the device manager...What makes it more frustrating is that you can here the drive disconnect with the windows defaul drive disconnect sound.wav...I have replaced the sata cable with several different sata cables (cuz we all know what an engineering cluster of a design that was) and same problem...I don't think its a power supply issue because the door still works and the drive spins up when you drop a disk in it...If someone out there has an idea I'd appreciate any input...

Here's what is under the hood:
Mobo: XFX680il
Pro: Pentium E8400 3.0Ghz
Vid: 2 9500 Gt's
Ram: Corsair XMS 4 Gigs (Only 2.5 being utilized)
Ops: Windows XP SP3 32bit
HD: Seagate 1TB
PS:BFG 800w
Sound: Diamond 7.1
Opticals: Sata Samsung SH-S203N
IDE LG DVD CDRW

Re: Drive intermittently dropping

There were some major problems with SATA drives and the Nvidia 680i chipset boards as I recall. Do you have the latest bios for the board?

Nvidia drivers are also not the best for SATA optical drives, there have been problems with them over the years. You have the latest version I take it?

Yeah, Kerry's advice is right on with the nVidia drivers.
Best to use XP default drivers with SATA ODD(s)
