| Copying Analogue Film To Dvd Hi, I am very new to this game and would apprciate any help you can give me. I have many films taken on a Canon Hi 8 camera. I have edited these and burnt to DVD but I am very disappointed in the loss of quality in the finished products. I understand I can convert these analogue films to a digital quality before editing for improved results. I looked at the Dazzle Video Creator Platinum which has a good price but have been told the performance is not very good. I have also looked at the DataVideo Dac 200 and would appreciate comments on this device. I have also been told I can copy to a digital camera with suitable input and would appreciate on what results I am likely to obtain with this method. I think I have enough emory on my computer for editing and would also appreciate any information on what I should convert my edited film to for best results when burning to DVD. Thank you, Alano |

| Re: Copying Analogue Film To Dvd What are your computer specs? Are you planning on doing much editing of your video, or do you just want to transfer it to dvd?

| Re: Copying Analogue Film To Dvd The quality of the input will be very important but you must keep in mind that you will not get any image improvement when you convert to digital - some codecs will even cause some loss. So, if you got the movies on DVD you already got them as digital media. To improve, you have to look at the capture/convert process from analogue to Mpeg2, the video editor and the DVD authoring packages. Take into consideration the used hardware and software ( most important - the intervening codecs), the project definitions and the final rendering modes (bit rates, bit rate modes, number of passages. etc.), and the burning process (software and media). So the answers to the former post are important. |

| Re: Copying Analogue Film To Dvd Thank you for your replies. I have a Packard Bell Pentium 4 computer 515 processor. 512MB DDR RAM, 160GB Hard Drive & ATi Radeon RX300 128Mb graphics. I have a large number of Hi8 films that I wish to edit and burn to DVD. As a previous user of cine film I enjoy the editing side of things. I will only put a sensible amount of film on one DVD to ensure the best quality available. Transfer to my computer has been by USB2 or S-Video. I have used Windows Movie Maker, Unlead Video Studio 7SE and ShowBiz DVD 2 for editing. I have burnt to DVD using ShowBiz or Nero but I am never quite know what settings to use. I do realise I am somewhat ignorant on all of this and some of your terms (codecs ? ) lose me a bit. Any further information would be appreciated. Thanks |

| Re: Copying Analogue Film To Dvd If you have analog films, which format did you capture them in (AVI or MPEG). If they are AVI, you need a good encoder to encode them to MPEG (MPEG2), then burn to dvd. I can help you fumble your way through this, but you would be far ahead, if you brushed up at www.videohelp.com, and learn the terminology, check out the tools section, and browse the forums for a bit. If you ask 12 different people how to do this, you will get at least 8 different answers. Opinions vary greatly as to the best methods for doing this. With a low powered pc like yours, I suggest you capture as avi, and then use a software to encode to mpeg2 (standard dvd format), or MPEG4 (divx or xvid), which is a more compressed video, but you then have to worry about compatibility with dvd players. You can look at tmpgenc software, or there are some good all in one softwares that are very good for amature video users. Ulead Video Studio 9 or 10, Adobe Premiere Elements, and Vegas Movie Studio are all good ones. There are many others.
