Newbie Forum Discuss, Compressing avi. files at Starters forum; I apologize if this has been asked a thousand times, but I'm new at this. How do you compress an avi file that's longer than two hours onto one DVD? Thanks in advance.

How large a file are you talking about? You have an avi file that is larger than 4.3gb? Is it uncompressed avi, or mjpeg, or huffyuv in an avi container file?

You can use AviDemux or Virtualdub to convert such a file to xvid avi. If it is already using the xvid codec, you can reduce the size by doing a two pass encode in AviDemux and set the bitrate to a lower value. This may affect the quality of the video adversely though.

You would need to know the codec used and current bitrate of course. Examine the file with MediaInfo for this information.

Of course, I may have misinterpreted what you want entirely. Do you want to convert over to dvd-video instead of just compressing the avi slightly? If that is what you want....something that can play on any dvd player....use DVDFlick or AVStoDVD or FAVC to convert to dvd video.

Yeah, I just want to turn it into a DVD video. Thanks!
