cdrw/dvd wont recognize blank disc

i recently had to reformat my compaq s5140wm. since that time i proceeded to try to burn some pictures to a cdr. but every time i put the disc in it ask for a blank disc. so now for the proscess of elimination. it WILL DO the following. read games movies music and any disc with content on it already. but will not recognize a blank disc. i am using imation cdr. and have tried several of them out of the case still the same results. now here is the tricky part. i decide to try out sonic record now and see what happens. and it will burn music and pics on these same imation disc. but if i try it with windows its a no go. is there a setting somewhere that is off. i know the hardware works because it will burn with sonic. any help would be appreciated thanks hillbilly

I'm having a similar [problem. What I find is that when I go to look at the drive's properties, it reads that the disc is set as a read-only, and that there is no recordable space on the disc. I go to the record tab, reset for record function, hit apply, and then reopen the drive. No chage has been made. This is happening with both my drives at this time. How can you make this change so I can start recording again? Drives me nuts.

Click on my computer highligh your DVD-RW in my computer page right click on the drive, click on property, on property page click on Recording and make sur the box for "enable CD recording on this drive" is checked do the same thing for second drive. I hope this would help.

I tried to do this because I am having the same exact problems...but I don't have the "recording" tab at all...what happened to it? I used to be able to record or "drag and drop" files to my cd drive, but can't now unless I use sonic or other recording programs. How do I get the recording tab back? Does anybody have any suggestions? HELP, PLEASE!!!
