| Burning fails: archival gold DvD, Samsung & Pioneer Hi! I have a problem with burning a dvd. I paid 10€ for a 5 DVD pack, because i read good stuff about the gold archive by verbatim. Now i wanted to burn some files (avi and mpeg) and I get error messages. 1st I tried my external Samsung SH S-162L burner then my internal Pioneer 107D burner. With the Samsung I got the 1st attached error (Logical Block address out of range), with the Pioneer I got the error in the 2nd attachment (Invalid address for write). Durr. ![]() In the last days I tried to burn images with my Pioneer, but that didnt work at all, always errors. It worked though with the Samsung so I thought the errors were due to the Pioneer Writer. Now I am lost on this one. Anyone have an advice? Cheers Hobo |

| Re: Burning fails: archival gold DvD, Samsung & Pioneer Well I would use ImgBurn (free) to burn. Also ImgBurn will ID the disc. Do you know who actually makes these discs? |

| Re: Burning fails: archival gold DvD, Samsung & Pioneer I think they are made by Prodisk, so they are supposed to be kinda good. I'll check on that, still looking for some analysis tool. edit: Just checked the dvd with disk identifier, it told me the dvd is from mcc. mh. On german wikipedia it says disk with this code are made by prodisc. Are they producing them in licence for mcc? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:MCC 02RG20 ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R] Manufacturer Name : [Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.] Manufacturer ID : [MCC 02RG20 ] Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- [ DVD Identifier V5.2.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by hoboslobobabe; 11-08-2009 at 18:22. If these blank discs are not Verbatim branded, I am not sure if they can be trusted. You may also check our Blank Media forum section, I am sure, you can find some additional information. Michael | |

| Re: Burning fails: archival gold DvD, Samsung & Pioneer Hi! What exactly do you mean by "not verbatim branded"? They are Verbatim Gold Archival Grade, made in taiwan. Everything looks just like on this page >>> http://www.verbatim.de/de_7/product_...-grade_27.html Yeah well, I dunno what to do now, I am about to make a backup of my hds, and now I cant, it kinda sucks .I have actually used these dvds before, bought from the same store, and they worked just fine. I'll check what the simulation burn says when I try to burn different files, let's see if the result is the same. Cheers Hobo edit: just tried another pack (had bought 2 for 10€ each ), tried completely different data, same result.20€ down the drain.... I think I will test them on a buddy's pc and if I get the same result, I will write to verbatim's customer service if they have any -.-. Last edited by hoboslobobabe; 11-08-2009 at 22:57. | solved: Burning fails: archival gold DvD, Samsung & Pioneer Hi ! I got an update with a happy ending I suppose. I tried out burning the archival grade DVD-R with Puppy Linux from a live CD... And it worked. So I thought to myself, what is the difference between my Win XP and my Linux. Since my System is set up rather new (installed my recovery image 2 weeks ago), I ruled out the possibility of a virus etc. At least it was not very probable. Also I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 so my system is rather safe if you can ever say that as windows user. So I figured maybe Kaspersky itself is the problem, with its proactive this and that, always checking the network traffic and processes etc. I turned it off, and yep, everything was working fine now. I have no clue why, but it is obvious to me that for some reason Kaspersky is the guy to blame. The funny thing though is that it doesn't prevent CDs/DVDs from being burnt successfully entirely all the time. Like I said, I had some trouble burning Images with my Pioneer but it worked with the Samsung just fine . Now I wanted to burn .avi files and neither burner worked with Kaspersky active, neither with Burnaware nor with Ashampoo. I just checked the same files that didnt work with Kaspersky turned on, now that it's off burning simulation is successful (simulation because that are the files I already burned with Linux). I never knew that AV/IS software like Kaspersky could cause such problems. I did a little search and it seems that you can solve the problem by putting a certain .exe of the burning programme on an exception list. So that when the burning software starts Kaspersky knows it's a trusted process and it doesn't analyse the opened files. You should expect that would be taken care of in the normal program control activity filter but apparently it isn't. When I added burnaware_data.exe to the exceptions it worked. I have the german KIS in english it would be something like : options > Threats and Exceptions > trusted zone > trusted programmes > add > browse > (in my particular case) burnaware_data.exe > open The other .exe files seem to be relevant too, so you might have to add them one by one to the exceptions. I suppose that if you only add the data.exe for instance, you will still not be able to burn iso-files, so as mentioned add them all, if there are several. And always use the simulation mode after making the change. Trashing the discs really sucks .Afaik you have to make sure that the option called something like "do not analyse executed processes" is checked. Maybe it is by default I am not sure. Would be nice if someone could translate to the correct terms Kaspersky is using. Perhaps I should have been suspicious when Kaspersky always showed a popup when I started burnaware since it meant it wasn't a generally trusted process. But on the other hand when I looked into program control > activity filter, Ashampoo had the "trusted" checked in every column and still burning wouldn't be successful. Still I dont understand why Kaspersky was not harming the burning process all the time but a lot of times. And now that I am thinking about it my buddy uses KIS 2009 too, and just recently when he wanted to burn an ISO for me it didnt work, but instead instantly came up with an error. I guess I can help him out there now .I'll report back when I checked that on his PC. Well, at least, problem solved, one disc trashed. Kaspersky owes me 2€ .Btw. I am considering using an external HDD, I am considering this for about a year or tow now .But so far I always felt more comfortable having DVDs for the backup, so that in case one DVD is broken, the damage is limited to the files on that one DVD. While if your HDD breaks down, it maybe that all your data is gone for good unless you are lucky AND you are willing to pay someone a decent amount of money to retrieve it. But I did come up today with the idea that instead of buying expensive DVDs for 2€ a piece that are supposed to be good, I could buy normal priced DVDs for 50 cent that aren't known to be bad. And then use these cheaper DVDs and a HDD for backing up the same files and have them twice. That should be relatively cheap, and low risk, and far less stress because I always feel bad buying a 5 pack of DVDs for 10€. Another alternative would be to have 2 HDDs and use one as a mirror. But I am kind of paranoid about viruses and trojans, so that if the drives should ever be infected, I will have a nervous breakdown .Finally I have to mention that is a pretty cool smiley, I like the twinkle.
