Burning DVD Backups using Alcohol 120%, plz help

Dear all,

I purchased the pack of P90X, which is a total of 13 discs and cost me $120. I also have a little one in the house that loves get her hands on movies! So with that being said, I wanted to back up my set. My step brother showed me a program called Alcohol 120%, where he could burn copy protected images no problem. So when I got home I purchased Alcohol 120%, which cost me another 70$. Well when I tried Alcohol, it wouldn't rip the dvd due to copy right protection. I emailed Alcohol soft, and they replied that their software doesn't do that. So I looked into it some more and found out that I had to have a third party software running in the backgound, so I found a software called ANYDVD, as long as it is running in the back ground, Alcohol will rip the copy protected dvds. So, now comes the real problem. The dvds will not play in my stand alone dvd player. When I am burning the disc, using alcohol, it looks like I am putting an MDS. file on the disc, which is what alcohol saved when it ripped the disc. Is this an issue of formats? Region codes? I don't know. Im very knew to this, but catch on quickly, if you can help me I would very much appreciate it! Thank you!

I've never used Alcohol . Many have trouble with it .
Since you have AnyDVD (I assume the trial version).
It will rip as DVD compliant folders or .iso .
Of course these rips are full size DVD9 (Dual Layer) size.
Are the discs you are attempting to write(burn) DL or Single Layer DVD discs ?

I am attempting to write I believe single layer, because it is under 4.7mg. Also, Alcohol does use MDS. as it's native format, but I also have an option to manually change it to iso. Should i try that? Im not familar with what iso. is. so I haven't tried that yet.

Re: Burning DVD Backups using Alcohol 120%, plz help

The MD5 probably directs Alcohols burning app to the .iso which should be on your harddrive somewhere.
If all Alcohol is burning to a DVD disc is the MD5 that won't do anything.
So check to see if there is an .iso for the movie already on your hard drive .
What is the file size ?

Re: Burning DVD Backups using Alcohol 120%, plz help

I assume it's an issue of the Device control interface.
Alcohol's default interface is SPTD.
Afaik AnyDVD (as well as other tools) don't function properly with some SPTD versions.
If you want to retry the Alcohol+AnyDVD Combo choose "Windows ATAPI/SCSI Control Interface"
instead (Options/General) ...i've never tried that though

btw. on the Alcohol Main page it's stated that "Due to the present legal restrictions DVD titles
protected with CSS protection can not be backed up".

As suggested by cholla you can create a backup using AnyDVD only.
I don't have AnyDVD, but i guess it's recommended for DVDs to first rip to folder,
and then burn e.g. with ImgBurn (free), CDBurnerXP (free), CloneDVD, nero etc.

Among others you can also try this free all-in-1 app:
http://www.bdlot.com/dvd-iso-master/download.htm (scroll down a little bit to get
the "BDlot DVD ISO Master - Free Download" link).

Re: Burning DVD Backups using Alcohol 120%, plz help

I've read Terramex post & he is familiar with alcohol.
AnyDVD may have a problem with SPTD . I have SPTD
uninstalled .
For finding the .iso if alcohol created one. Most software has a default folder
If one is not specified. You could use Search with *.iso .The .iso should be 5 to 9GB
so should show up as an increase in your harddrive size if one has been created.
If all alcohol created is a MDS file then something is wrong because it should be a small file.
As I posted AnyDVD can do a rip by itself to .iso or DVD compliant folders . It won't be compressed so can only be burned to a DL DVD disc.
If you are going to burn it to a SL DVD disc you need to compress it .
I use various software to do this myself.
DVDRebuilder is one of the best but being an encoder takes some time.
DVDShrink is outdated but works most of the time.
I also have CloneDVD2 which is paid software & is a transcoder.

****ok so i changed the options to the Windows ATAPI, and after it burnt the disc, i tried it in my dvd player. it played some of the audio, but it was very broken while showing a black screen (NO VIDEO AT ALL) so that option did get me a little further, but no dice yet. I think i will try to rip with ANYDVD now, and then use something else to burn it to disc. I just need to figure out this compression thing, IF i compress it to a SL disc, will it still play on a stand alone dvd player>???

That is the point of compressing so it will fit on a SL disc .
It should play fine on a standalone.
For ease of use you might try the trial of CloneDVD2 for compressing.

Okay, making DVD Back-ups is not Rocket Science, but you do have to know the basics. I use DVDFab and Verbatim Media, but it can be done with other software and Media. To play your Back-ups on a stand alone DVD Player or Blu-ray Player, you have to understand you are streaming VOB Video Files to your HDTV. So you are burning a Data Disc with the Video Folder where these VOB Files are located. Once you get that concept burning Back-ups will come to you as second nature. I like to burn Movie Only at full resolution, so I will use SL and DL depending on the size of the Movie.

@alchav
Maybe for compressing/transcoding good old DVD Shrink 3.2 is also worth a shot.

Re: Burning DVD Backups using Alcohol 120%, plz help

@ Bski05 , I know you have paid for Alcohol 120% & it has its uses but also causes problems. I would uninstall it for now. Return it for a refund if possible.
Next since you already have AnyDVD get CloneDVD2 . Both have a trial version .
Once you have both of these installed . For making SL copies (movie only)do this:
1. Run AnyDVD for decrypting.
2. Run CloneDVD2 for ripping to your hard drive .
3. Select " Copy DVD Titles " .
4. Select your drive with the DVD in it.
Make sure preserve menus is unchecked.
Select DVD-5 for Quality .Push Next.
5. Keep or delete any Audio streams to your liking. Push Next.
6. Output method: DVD Files
output directory: Type in drive & folder with movie title .
Check " Add VIDEO_TS directory to path "
Select "Go".
Let CloneDVD2 rip the movie to your harddrive.
When it finishes:
1. Select " Write Existing Data ".
2. Source DVD movie files. This should have the folder with the movie just ripped already there . If it doesn't browse to it.
Output method : DVD Writer .
DVD writer: Select the drive with a blank DVD in it. Set speed either 6 or 8X.
Volume label: Type movie title . I prefer capitals for example:
COWBOYS_AND_ALIENS For a multi-disc set add D1 ; D2 etc.
3. Select "Go".
It should begin the write to the blank disc & sound when complete.
As above use good blank media . Verbatim or TY is suggested.

Once you have burned a few this way it will give you some better idea how to use other software . If you want to do this with some trial versions you can try DVDFab's trial after the AnyDVD & CloneDVD2 trials expire.
You will probably want to use one of those as a paid software eventually.
