Certainly the Benq (currently in 1640 form) , the LGs & the NECs are all good choices. Don't know much about the Liteons these days but avoid the ASUS I think.

I run an LG4163B & Benq 1620 & just prefer the LG over the Benq. The only advantage the Benq has is it's quality scanning function. The LG gives better support for hi-speed DVD+RW that I use.

If you look at some of the Optical Devices forum you'll often see images of quality scans.

These show you how well the burn was actually done & is useful in giving you confidence in what you burn.

Personally I scan every DVD I burn before I delete things from my PC, others don't bother though.

I guess if I was now buying a single DVD RW then I'd opt for one that had this functionality. That means , of your list, Benq, Liteon & NEC.

BenQ, LG or one of the nec's would be my choice.
But first choice personally for me would be the benq 1640 like TimC mentioned.

I like my LG drive.. its very fast and has given me good burns.. but isn't it verified so it isn't bad? Can't I just try copying the data back from the DVD/CD to see if the burn is good? In other words, why scan, aren't there other ways?

I'd avoid the Nec 4550A until things clear up. Many people have problems with 16X burning with this drive. If you take the NEC route, the 3540A is a more safe choice IMO.

I have the Nec 3540A, Nec 4550A, Pioneer 109 and Benq 1640, my favorite drive is the 1640, then the 3540A. I'm more and more disappointed with the 4550A, except for CDR burning and DVD ripping.

The Benq 1620 pro is overpriced and not worth it if you ask me. The 1640 is better and less expensive (at least where I live). Probably the best all-rounder.
