Newbie Forum Discuss, Best Basic DVD Ripper? at Starters forum; I'm getting rid of Nero (Recode crashes constantly and the burner only works half the time) and thus need to re-supplement my computer with some basic programs. I'm getting DVD-Rebuilder for transcoding and IMGburn for burning (sort of besides the point, but anyhow...) I need a really basic, no-frills DVD

I'm getting rid of Nero (Recode crashes constantly and the burner only works half the time) and thus need to re-supplement my computer with some basic programs. I'm getting DVD-Rebuilder for transcoding and IMGburn for burning (sort of besides the point, but anyhow...) I need a really basic, no-frills DVD ripper. I will not be ripping copy-protected DVDs (I buy all of my movies legally) but I will be needing to rip non-copyright protected DVDs like home videos. So I don't need anything fancy-shmancy. Basically I want something with an "A-B-C" easy-to-use, one-click dummy interface.

There are SO many programs out there, that I thought I'd just ask here to save myself a huge headache trying to research them.

Many thanks.

For plain backups without further processing, I'd suggest DVDfab HD decrypter. http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm

If your dvds are not encrypted, all you have to do is go to My Computer (in XP), right click on the drive with the dvd in it, then hit Explore. This will show the contents of the disk. You should see a Video_TS folder there. Right click on the folder and hit Copy. Then click Paste wherever you want to put the folder. You can also drag and drop the folder to the spot on the hard drive you want.

If you still want a ripper, DVDDecrypter is perfectly good for this sort of thing too. You can find it at www.mrbass.org It will rip non-encrypted disks as well as those with simple CSS encryption.

By the way, we support people making copies of dvds they own as part of fair use, even if those dvds are encrypted. So discussions of breaking encryption are certainly allowed here. This website follows Dutch law, not US law on decryption. Michael's suggestion for a ripper would be the one to use if you are going to rip dvds with extra structural copy protection, so you might prefer to just learn that one program.

Well, I am rather unexperienced if it comes to DVD backups (I also don't have much need for that), but the free version of Fab meets my requirements, and I don't want to think about it if a video DVD is somehow manipulated or not.

For totally unencrypted discs (really rare here) copying the video_ts folder using any file manager would be enough.
