hi guys, i have some general questions about 3D holograms, projection technology and stereoscopic 3D.

1. is it possible for a standard tv to display any of the mentioned technologies WITHOUT glasses? in other words, is it possible to display 3D technology through a normal screen without the need for glasses?

2. is 3D hologram technology very expensive? would it be afforable by next year to the average consumer? how good is the quality?

3. i have read on numerous sites that the movie and film industry will take advantage of steroscopic 3D technology in 2007. that is, 3D coming out of the screen by a trick on the eyes which requires no physical projection of an image and no need for glasses. could this be true?

thanks guys, i dunno much about this technology but i find it interesting because it looks like it is coming up in the very near future. if you post any answers, links would be much appreciated but are not mandatory.
thanks again.

It's not going to happen soon. Holigraphic technology is still very imperfect and very expensive from what I have been able to find on it. Doing it with glasses is simple technology. as your eyes are at diffrent locations, they see a slightlly diffrent image, and your brain uses the diffrence to create depth perception. The glasses have diffrent color filters, so that it can be controled what image is seen by which eye. Thats not very new technology and its not very complex. A regular tv can do that.
As far as something that doesn't require glasses, the only thing I am aware of that might be geared towards tv with current development is a process of having diffrent images painted at diffrent levels with a laser. Kind of like the printed holigrams you see, that have diffrent images on semi reflective layers that kind of fool your eyes into incorectlly perceiving dpeth that is not there, but in motion. The images wont be out in the air, but rather the screen will look like it has depth. I wouldn't expect this kind of technology at a consumer level soon though, and when it finally is, like any new technology, it isn't going to be cheap (In fact it will probably be very expensive).

thanks for your answer, i do understand what you mean about the tv having depth but not really coming out at you and that still does sound quite kool, kinda like the tv is an actual box and the screen is a window into a virtual world.

i read (and apologies i cant find the link) that james cameron, george lucas, robert rodriguez and peter jackson (steven speilberg may have been in there too) were talking about how the film industry will use stereoscopic 3d in 2007. i am really intrigued by this because as we all know it is next year! is it possible that this kind of technology has advanced in recent years to a level where cinemas would use it? its so interesting.

i also read that kiosks are using 3d technology to advertise. here is the link...

if youre interested, read the link and tell me what you think. i find this so amazing that it could be in the home in the next few years.

btw, the article in that link is from june 2004, so its already 2 years old!

It would be interesting to find out how much those kiosks cost? Looking at some of the ones avalable, the image projected is only a few inches by a few inches. I couldn't find costs but I'm guessing the cost is what makes them so small, not that it would be too hard to build something biger. That makes me think they are pretty expensive.

Looking a little further, there are actually 3d monitors avalable already. a 10 inch monitor cost 40,000.00$!!!! Thats kind of what I figured. Still, if they are already avalable then eventually others will start making them and costs will come down, but I would guess more like 5-10 years before you see a consumer one and it will still probably be thousands of dollars at first, but who knows, technology can move pretty fast.

Edit, I didn't see swifty7 post. It looks like those sharp monitors sell for 1500$. I wonder how well they work?
