Why can't PS2 play backups?

If you make a perfect 1:1 copy of a PlayStation 2 game then why won't the PS2 just read it as if it is any other PS2 game?

Why do you need mod-chip etc if you have made a replica of a PS2 game??

Is it something to do with the type of disc you use?

Re: Why can't PS2 play backups?

Because you haven't made an exact copy of the PS2 disc.

You've made an exact copy of the data files on the disc.

The disc contains copy protection schemes which consumer dvd writers cannot reproduce.

Check the technical forums for more details on PS1/PS2 disc protections, although I'd recommend that you don't post in the technical forums unless you have something technical to contribute to the particular thread - but judging from this thread, I doubt it.

Thanks, very helpful. I have scanned many PlayStation/PlayStation 2 discs myself, and most are protected by LibCrypt.
