Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

I like Jewel cases but I think an equally (maybe more) important point is how you handle them (fingerprints, etc.) as well as the conditions they are subject to while being stored. For example, is the storage area kept a relatively constant temperature.

Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

I store mine individually in jewel cases and slim cases, in a cupboard drawer on their side, in dark conditions.

Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

I keep some of my archived material in an old spindle case that use to hold blank CD-Rs. I tossed in some scratched up CDs on top and bottom and placed some dessicant material from various electronic packages on top. I am just crossing my fingers this method of storage is ok.

I also keep my DVDs in slim jewel cases in a drawer full of darkness.

I also keep some CD-RS and DVD-/+Rs in some really strange plastic sleeves, stored away in an Avery CD wallet. Too bad, Avery doesn't manufacture those any more because I would buy like five more sets of those cd wallets. I stored some CD-Rs in there for 8 years and they still scan better than all of my recent TY burns.

Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

At first I was buying media in jewel cases then in slim cases , but now I buy them in spindles .
I tried paper sleeves which turned out to be a horrible idea . I bought some slim cases but didn't like them very much .
The safest way would be :
Store them in jewel cases and put the JC vertically in a cool dry dark place

Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

At this very moment I have piles of disk's around me as I try to 'slowly' get them all into better order in 120 disk cases . I have got mine over the last few years from many places but I will be getting them from SVP from now on. I dont know if these are the same, but most of mine have soft fiber inlays that keep the disks in very good nik, some being 4/5 years old that look like new, not a scrach or finger print

I then keep them in the draws of a big desk where they can stand on end. I have found this the best (so far) way to house them in a small space, but still be able to flick thru without having to touch them. I have other not often used stuff on the spindles, but dont like it if I need to pull out some from the bottom as you have to get involved with the lot.

The only bad bit is like now when I 'try' to get them into better order I should just leave as they are.

I Keep all mine in plastic wallets stored in a cupboard. Throw in a few of them sachets that you get from new shoes\show boxes, to help dry up any mositure in the air.

Paper sleeves tend to scratch discs and allow dust to get into them .
I put some of Sony D21 MIJ in paper sleeves and they scanned horribly after few days , I thought they were degrading , but after inspection I found that paper sleeves did that to the discs . Also happened with Verbatim MCC 004
I then started to store discs in slim or jewel cases and no degradation in scans whatsoever .

Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

Whatever soft cases i can get hold of except Datawrite's (yep, they can't make those either ) Stored with discs hanging down. Left some pages empty to avoid pressure. My original cd/dvd's are in the hard dj-style boxes stripped for jewel cases. Since i don't really use my backups i don't think they are stressed in the wallets. I usually keep files on hd's long enough to satisfy my need for the files so back up is just because i'm paranoid - and i'm very paranoid about my precious projects, lol

I suppose i have a little less than 8000 discs (app 5000 audio cd(m)s) so jewel/dvd cases would mean i need a bigger place to live even i that would be perfect storage

Why not store 'em in what these discs are sold: the spindles holding 25pcs? No extra expenses...

This will not work with all discs. Some discs, for example, lack stacking rings. Handling is also not good if the discs are used frequently.

Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

I generally use binders similar to this one:

http://www.supermediastore.com/cd-dv...r-epv-520.html

Do you think that style is good for storage?

I was thinking of possibly purchasing this as my next/replacement case:

http://www.supermediastore.com/cd-dv...-capacity.html

What do you guys think of these?

I store mine in a mixture of ways; Main set in wallets in a box, another set in a DJ-style case, and the rest in slim/regular jewel cases.

I have used a few of the metal cases above for over a year with no scratches, or degradation. They are ideal for getting at what you want and filing so you can find them. The lastest vesion has plastic sleves that are a bit tight but they are easily stretched out.

I am sold.

BTW, watch for the 510 at meritline for $40 shipped. They go on sale often. I prefer the 510 as the larger model is a bit bulky.

Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

Looks like the 510 is 49.99 with coupon including shipping currently at meritline. It appears the sleeves are meant for 2 discs in each sleeve. Are the sleeves decent plastic? Have they ripped easily? I agree with the bulkiness of the wallet type 520 model. I have Caselogics (which hold 328 I think and seems basically identical to the 520) which they sell at Best Buy and other stores...which does get quite heavy...but of course the aluminum case will get heavy too :-\.

I assume with the 510 the sleeves wouldnt shift or fall out of place much (if transporting) since the box seems snug when closed...

Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

Well i guess it depends on how meny discs you have and how much space you have at the end of the day.Any data i want to archive for a long long time i will proberly keep in a cd jewel case, everything else at the mo is in books,I have way too meny discs .
I did use storage books that hold 240 discs, they was early ones , datawrite branded. But i have since given up on books as the last lot i bought the zips tore out after a while, the discs also seemed to get marked more from the friction as the folder moved about in different directions. I am now in the process of changing my discs over to djstyle case's.

All original audio cds, film dvds and games(pc and all consoles i have) stay in there original case. At least with the backups if the get to badly marked i dont have to buy new i can just re-backup.

@chas0039, i have a 390 discs mirror brand djstyle i did notice the sleves are a tad tight, how have you gone about stretching them out a bit. Was thinking of only using one side of the sleeve but then that cuts 390 storage down to 195.

Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

Imo the 4-500 soft cases are pretty unhandy. I'd recommed the smaller ones, 1-200 or aluminium for a larger number. I have 5x600 + 3x420 alu (just cd's) and a ton of soft cases for cdr&dvdr but i regret the 500 soft case i got - will switch those discs to smaller cases later

thanks for your reply though

I just bought one of these from a seller in Australia. I'm very happy with it. I have a slight concern about when taking the discs out of the sleeves will they get scratched? So far they haven't so I think I'm just being paranoid.

Re: whats the best way to store dvd's

With slim cases, the disc surface has direct contact to the dirty case.
I prefer jewel cases for DVD, and possibly Blu-Ray.
Slim cases are good enough for CD though, as the information isn't as dense on CDs.
