| Ok, I've stumbled across what I thought was a fantastic deal, they had Sony 10 packs of 4x DVD-R @ staples in jewel cases. My friend bought a whole crapload of them for $4 each, and they ID as Taiyo Yuden G01! The problem comes in when you try to burn them, every single one of them craps out @ 1%, and gives an error. It doesn't matter what speed or firmware on my 3500a, or my friend's. I haven't had a chance to try them in a different burner, but everything else still burns fine. So, I'm not sure if it's just a bunk batch, fake media, or what's up, but they are DEFINETLY JUNK!!!

| I seriously doubt Sony branded discs are fake. If it has a GC00xxxx stamper serial, it's truly TY media. Have you tried any other TYG01 on your drive? It seems rather unusual for an NEC drive to have trouble with TY media, but it's possible. I've had TYG01 crap out on me before on my very briefly owned Pioneer A07, but it's generally excellent media. |
| In any case, these are to be avoided so thanks for the warning.

| I think they are defective TY, but I doubt that they are fake TY

| I'd also suggest your friend checks his setup .... aspi layer ok? If the problems persist, report it to TY

| Well, he returned the unused disks to staples. I tried them on my system too, and got the same result, 1%, and it pukes, spitting out an error in nero. If I looked @ the under side of the disc, I could see a ring on the inside where it almost looks like it started to burn something and died even BEFORE they were burnt! I even tried the stock NEC firmware, and got the same result, even @ 4x!!! So, I think they're definetly garbage, and as for a serial number, they did say GCXXX, but like I show, only 3 digits after the GC, not 6!!! Any other disk burns fine, but the Sonys all puke @ 1%. I dunno, it seems like they got some fakes to me, because I've NEVER had a yuden that looked or acted like theese! They might be real, and just look different because of the Sony markings, but the Fuji yudens look nothing like theese!

It seems any pirate outfit could add any stamper id they want. Is there a link to learn morea bout the "stamper id" and what it really means and if we should give a poopoo. thx |
| on -r media there is a ring normally. i don't know what the terminology is for it but it isn't there on a +r. it looks like a single track around the dvd right next to the opc area

| It's definitely on TY +R 8x's....silver type ring or something...writing stamped on it "TGxxxx".. and a number on the other end of the ring "0501" or similar.... |

| Which unfortunately blows up in your face, when the burner can not write a TYG02 strat correctly on infodisc disks (most of these are infodisc), and you wind up with an error cliff of 1,000 PIE average and 300 PIF average... It's happened to several people with fake TY's..... Make those fake disks burn with an infodisc strat, and the error levels drop to very low levels..... |
| Yo- Just looked at my TYG01's Got the "GD000217" batch code and "0410" opposite - but nowhere does it say TYG01 on the disc-
