I bought a 50 pack cake yesterday and I noticed that my burner LG GSA-H54N 1.00 was making a different sound while burning them, so I checked and the discs are stamped VERBATIM DVD+R 16x in the outside, but IMGBURN shows them as RITEK-R05-01... ![]() Ritek is making these discs. Verbatim buys them from Ritek. If you want to know why I stress this point, please read this: The "dye" myth, or all about the "Mediacode" / "ADVInfo" / "MID Now to the point: it has already been reported here, about five weeks ago or so, that Verbatim was starting to sell outsourced (non-MCC) DVDRs to some markets in "regular" Verbatim packages. The report was about Ritek F1 discs if I remember well. *EDIT* I found the thread: Verbatim Ritek F1 It's not good news. - while I think that most Ritek stuff (excluding G05) is rather decent media when sold under reliable brands, it's really annoying that in some countries people can't just trust the Verbatim brand and be sure that they get "the real thing" (MCC stuff).

| Your sig will only cause confusion with newbies. How do you know the discs are crappy? 16x Ritek/Ricoh/MBI has proved to be more than ok for most people. Also, Maxell and Verbs can be just as cheap as lesser known brands. It just depends where you buy them from. I think you should wait for more reports, and actual proof that the discs are bad before you start telling people to stay away from verbs.

| R05 is not bad media. It's stable and the performance on some drives with some settings (For instance Benq 1640 12x Solidburn on.) look better as what people are reporting for the TY made verbatims on some drives with some settings.

| The parallel to Ritek R05 -- RicohJPN R03 [often made by Ritek] -- uses the same dye [yes, same dye with different MID] and more often than not has great results, even from some distributors that brand subpar media. I'd imagine that the RITEK R05 branded as Verbatim would be good. Methinks they wouldn't risk the brand name for poor media. ![]() [ot]I can't remember where I saw that RITEKR05 and RICOHJPN R03 shared a dye, but looking at them with the naked eye shows similar/same coloring, and strategy swaps usually result in very similar performance.[/ot]

| Colour says nothing ! What we do know is that Ritek-R05 used stampers which followed ricoh code system which then gave the idea of R05 uses Ricoh technology.

In Portugal, all i get is MCC's genuine on my Verbatim, MII or MIT. and i get a pack of 50 per 19€ Ritek-R05 are very nice too, i bought a 10pack of Fuji, they were ritek r05 and the results are very good, just a bit more PIF than Verbatim (about 600/900 PIF total) and just a bit higher PIE.

| I don't know what the mega fuss is sometimes? Unless it's known to be crappy media, people should wait before complaining/telling others not to buy. This is aimed @ Joseph5 btw. I don't mean to start a flame fest or anything mean here but RitekR05 might be very decent media. If dhakaas says it's stable and whatnot, I'm inclined to believe this as he knows a fair amount of interesting things in the media scene. Let's not forget that if Ritek G04 and G05 didn't degrade, they would have destroyed just about every other manufacturer due to their cheapness and unbelievably high compatibility in DVD players

| Traxdata branded RITEK R05 has been extremely good to me - scans here and here. These were from two seperate batches, one of which was FF-printable. Some may think the jitter is a tad high on the Pioneer burn, but it doesn't have any effect on playback on any of my devices ![]() Personally, I really like both Prodisc and Ritek 16x media, but am definately not a fan of either CMC or MBI 16x media |

| I admit my mistake, when I originally created the signature, most Ritek was G05, hence the "crappy" remark. I changed the signature again. I hope everyone is happy now. Some people may argue saying that Verbatim and Maxell don't have "premium prices", but in Latin America they do, and many people looking for quality media in these countries pay that premium only to find out that they could've gotten the same discs under the Ridata brand for half the price.

| Re: Verbatim media manufactured by whom? I have used the regular "Wal-Mart" brands, ie. Maxell, Memorex, Sony, TDK with an occasional coaster, but I have never had a coaster on my NEC ND-2500A or Samsumg SH-S203B burners with Verbatim media, either CD or DVD. I usually buy my discs at Newegg.com, but I ran out recently, and bought a 100 pack of Verbatim silver CD-R discs at Sam's Club. When I just happened to check them with Nero tools, the disc report identified them as Ritek. Furthermore, when I checked the Verbatim Data-Life P/N 95079 DVD-R printable white discs I bought from Newegg, Nero identified them as MCC 03RG20, which another CDFreak forum participant said was Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. They all work well, however. I need to add that the 16X max DVD-R burns on my Samsung at 18X, and works well at my NEC at its rated 8X speed. The 52X max CD-R burns at 48X speed on my Samsung (its rated speed). Last edited by RSVP; 02-03-2008 at 09:16. Reason: additional information |

MCC disc models (MCC 004, MCC 03RG20 etc..) are what to be expected in "proper" Verbatim-branded discs packages. Ritek CDRs are not bad, and sometimes even better than some Verbatim's (Mitsubishi/MCC) own CDR discs.

| Verbatim is owned by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, however there's nothing stopping them from distributing media from other manufacturers. These days with media being priced so low, distributors will do anything to cut costs, and if it means outsourcing, they will do it. And Ritek is a manufacturer that is very capable of producing a good disc (and do a lot of the time). Regards, TerminalVeloCD
