Re: TY(TaiyoYuden) MIJ DVD-R DL 8x "TYG11"

Thankies!
I guess now it's really time to release a Version 1.1 of the Taiyo Yuden FAQ.
TYG11 has a BG hub code... *notes*
The bad scan might have been caused by the non-existant firmware support. I hope TY will kick the drive manufacturers' asses to fix that problem.

It looks to be like the PX-760A has firmware support for TYG11, otherwise it wouldn't have burned at 6X, I think.

I think the results are poor for a couple reasons. First, DVD-R DL just sucks as a format, IMO. It's regrettable that TY chose to go with a poor format with poor compatibility. Second, TY may just not be terribly good at making dual layer discs at this point in time. TY really has not impressed me as of late - just look at their 16X media, it sucks alot of the time. Perhaps they need time to work on it. Inadequate firmware support could be an issue, too.

Re: TY(TaiyoYuden) MIJ DVD-R DL 8x "TYG11"

Im disapointed that they are using -rdl. Just because the format isnt dvd player friendly. Surely they will have a +r version too?

I just hope ***the drive manufacturers*** get their act together to make firmware support better.

Agreed on both counts.

Thanks for the heads-up, thia@9

How can getting firmware support be TY getting their act together? FW is not their job, but the drive manufacturers, therefore it is drive manufacturers that have to get their act together and get fw support sorted out. I am still running BSLB as others are more variable in their abilities.

I would have thought TY had quite a big say in how the writing strategy works for their discs. But if its completely up to the manufacturer of the drives then i stand corrected.

Hehe, I misread what I quoted (duh)...true, FW support is down to the drive makers (AFAIK, anyway).

I haven't heard of a possible YUDEN000 T11 yet. Actually from what I've heard the dash format is much more widespread in the country of the high quality burns.
If you know POMSC* discs, those are made by 3A Media of Austria. It is a company which gets EU funding and money from the State of Burgenland, but still remains unsupported. But they at least release edited firmwares instead of faking media codes.

Re: TY(TaiyoYuden) MIJ DVD-R DL 8x "TYG11"

I think part of the problem is that Taiyo Yuden is very used to getting everything handed to them because they are "THE" Taiyo Yuden. But lately their "god-like" status has been wearing off, and they seem to have forgotten how to actually WORK for proper support. This has been noticable with their 16x DVDR media lately, but obviously most recently, this DVD-RDL media shows it as well.

Of course, it already goes to show just how completely out of the loop TY has become in the fact that they are releasing a DVD-RDL, while they have no DVD+RDL in the works.

BenQ scans of media burned in other drives frequently look like this, with a sudden jump in jitter to 12% or more and a simultaneous jump in PIE/PIF levels.

That makes it hard to say whether this is just a result of BenQ reporting results differently than other drives as usual, or whether the second layer "really" has worse quality than the first layer. Scanning the disc on another drive might clear that up.

Ive got a BenQ 1620 and 1650. Jitter over 12% doesnt raise the PIF for me, even with discs burned in an LG. Only jitter over 14% or 15% causes this to happen.

Ok first of all this Media is sold for Video.
Over here every japanese Brand for DVD-R has 1 product line for Video and 1 for Data some even have this for DVD+R too (Sony for example uses a big V on their DVD+/-R for Video Package and a big D for the Data one). The difference is that the newer DVD-R for Video Lineup have support for CPRM because recording of Digital broadcast to DVD-R requires the Media to be CPRM enabled (well at least in Japan) where as the for Data line up has no need of CPRM at all.
Now about choosing DVD-RDL. Over here Panasonic, Pioneer, Toshiba only support DVD-RDL. Sony only DVD+RDL. Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Sharp and JVC do not support either format or do not list DVD+or-RDL support for recording in their Catalogs (at least I could not find it).
Another thing is that in Japan the -R is generally the more supported, available, popular and used format than +R (for standalones as well as PC drives). DVD+RDL is the only exception but only for PC Drives where DVD-RDL is not so good supported like the + version.
Here +R is the less popular format!
That is also why no japanese Brands sell Spindles of 50pcs +R discs. Thats, Maxell, Sony, Mitsubishi, JVC and TDK do not carry 50pcs spindle of any sort of DVD+R at all! You can buy 50pcs Spindle of TY but they are not sold through the normal japanese channel and not under the Thats, Maxell, TDK Sony etc Brands.
I do not know if there is a +RDL comming from TY or not but for Maxell this is just a new addition as they already have a DVD+RDL product in their DVD for Video lineup and no DVD-RDL. Also as of now there is no Press release from TY or Thats about any DL discs at all (at the moment this Media is available through the OEM channel only with no official press release what so ever from TY/Thats).
So in my oppinion why should TY first release a DVD+RDL for the Video lineup when DVD+RDL is the less supported standard for Standalones?

Re: TY(TaiyoYuden) MIJ DVD-R DL 8x "TYG11"

koba some people forget that TYs main market, and first market, is you guys in Japan, and expect the whole world to work the same way. Therefore they forget also that Ty is going to cater for its' primary market first, the rest of the world can wait.

There is no specific format for video or data, both are fine. It is just support in players that matters.

By the way stop rubbing it in that you can get TY brand Thats discs it's no fair

Re: TY(TaiyoYuden) MIJ DVD-R DL 8x "TYG11"

The Discs are the same for Video and for Data. The only difference is as I said CRPM support and sometimes the for Video discs depending on store cost a little bit more. Now the Data/Video thing in my argument was only to say that the package says Video and for Video/Standalones DVD-RDL (but only for Video/Standalones) is the better supported medium (Panasonic, Pioneer, Toshiba).
Btw in Japan a 50pcs Spindle of Thats 8X DVD-R costs around $25US while you can get 100Pcs of 8x TY DVD-Rs for $31.99US from Rima (both prices do not include shipping).....So I envy those from America who can get TY for such low prices (actually I once asked a friend to bring me TY from Rima when he visited me). So I get Thats and the American get the TY cheaper than I do...

In Germany (and in almost all other places in Europe) the media prices are even higher than in Japan, which I would even consider a ripoff.
A 50 pcs cakebox of non-TY 8x DVD-R can cost more than € 30 ($38.60).

This is consoling, isn't it?

This is consoling, isn't it?
I've never quite understood why Japanese companies always ripoff their own country for selling prices. Although from what I understand with TY, it's strictly volume oriented. There is really only one distributor that gets good pricing from TY in North America. Everyone pretty much gets it from there, either directly or indirectly. I know a distributor of TY in Canada who purchases direct from TY, and their pricing is so bad, that customers of customers of customers from the good source in the US, can still have a better COST then the Canadian distributor who goes direct to TY. Of course the Canadian distributor probably does less then 1/20th the business anyways.

The existance of this media code was posted here some time ago, you'll find it in the LiteOn firmwares dating back a ways.

And not to count the almost 20% V.A.T. and the doubled income taxes in Europe...

Like I said in a similar thread, I don't like the look of that 'CPRM'.
