Hi this is my first time trying to burn movies onto blank 700mb Memorex CD-R discs. I thought it was going to be pretty straight forward; just drag and drop the movie file onto the blank cd.

I put the disc into the optical drive and then I tried a few things like opening the drive from My Computer or right clicking on the movie file and selecting "Send To DVD RW Drive"; either way it prompts me to name the disc then proceeds to format it. The problem then is that formatting it uses 6 mb of space! So I only have 696mb of space left on the disc (out of the 702mb max total capacity) and I can't put my 700mb movie files onto it anymore because there's not enough space. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I tried formatting it again and this time after it finished it only had like 656 mb of space left...so I tried to bypass this whole formatting business but my computer isn't letting me.

It sounds like you're utilizing packet writing software to write to blank optical media, much like the good old days of magnetic floppy discs when formatting was commonplace.

A solution to your problem would be to use a proper disk writing software like paid software Nero Burning ROM or freewares ImgBurn and CDBurnerXP. Dragging and dropping or using "Send To CD/DVD±RW Drive" under the right-click contextual menu usually utilizes packet writing methods which require extra space on the disc, space which is not needed if the disc is properly authored using a conventional writing method.

I may be mistaken in my findings but it certainly seems as if this is the issue you are encountering. If my solution is not appropriate then more information regarding your hardware, operating system, and disk writing programs you have are needed for me and other forum members to suggest another solution to the problem.

Drag and drop has nothing to do with burning at all!
As explained, you have used some kind of Packet writing which takes up EXTRA space.
