Hi all,
I recently purchased a spindle of 4x white top Taiyo Yuden TYG02s and I've noticed that the colour of the dye is lighter than that of RiTEK G04s. Even worse, the colour of the dye is pretty much similar to that of dodgy Laser DVDs
I bought the TYs from JPLDisplays
I thought that, in general, the darker the dye, the better? Perhaps I'm mistaken.

Firstly, TYG02's should be 8x....you might have got the bonus pack.
I don't see very much correlation with the dye color. I once used Ritek 4x....very dark.....one batch was awesome, and one batch sugged weenies.
Have you tried them out?__________________

hmmm, TYG02 is 8X rated media, the Ritek dye is bright purple and the TY dye is dark blue purple. Something fishy about the media you bought. How reputable is that store? __________________

Thanks for your replies.
The store I bought the TYs from is quite reputable in Australia.
As for the media being 8x, I checked up on its specks using DVDInfoPro and it confirms that they're indeed 8x media. Boy am I happy

I've also burnt one to see if they really live up to the quality. As I've got a Pioneer 107D, I'm not able to probe it; so instead I used Neros' DVD/CD Speed tests
Under the mistaken belief that these discs were rated at 4x, I burnt the test DVD at 4x and the curves were very straight. -

I'm not sure how to really distinguish between genuine and fake TYG02 by merely looking at the dye or appearance, but i know there are so many fake TYG02 DVD-R in australia now.........at least i've "accidently" bought 2 different spindles which are all fake.........one is LASER (sigh........unbelievable)......i forgot the name of another one.....i'll check it out later
the best way to figure out is to use nero to burn a testing disc and then run different disc quality tests in nero or KProbe.......and then you'll see what is "superb" what is really called "CRAP"!.........
however, the interesting is, although there are different fake TYG02 dvds, but the quality is still different and inconsistent........(should i feel fortunate or upset...)......some are better than other.......
at least the LASER fake TYG02 i bought was unbelievablly pathetic.......the nero disc quality results prove that......

Media codes can be forged......the way to check if the discs are real is on the serial numbers on the disc. Should start with GG for yours. e.g. TG001125
If your Taiyo Yudens were from JPL then you'll be fine. If the discs you were talking about are Lasers, then they are without a doubt - using fake MID code.
(didn't fully understand your wpool post)
And btw...the makes us wonder if all of the 4x white top discs JPL send are gonna be 8x now... -

I had a look at the serial code in the inner ring of the DVD: GG000110.
Does it sound legit?
Cheers. -

Sweet as
Seems like JPL's 4x white top DVD-Rs will be shipped at 8x spindles! Get 'em while you can! -

i wanna buy a pack now
dicer is right, the two fake TYG02 i bought merely have "weird" serial numbers.........the LASER one i got has nothing like "GG" or any no. for identigying whether it's geunine or fake TYG02
btw, based on my previous experience, using 2x for buring fake TYG02 still can produce "reasonable" quality of discs......

I guess the only safe way is to buy MIJ big brand name media like TDK, SONY, FUJI, Maxell, Panasonic, and a few others, any were brands, stay away from them __________________

Brand name means nothing when it comes to optical media. In most cases, if not all, there may be multiple manufacturers for the brand names, and whose quality are questionable. You need only search on the Afterdawn.com media database to see how many manufacturers are behind the said big brands
Of course, having said that, (genuine) Taiyo Yuden branded DVDs are in fact made by Taiyo Yuden in Japan
