OK

I was just introduced to these forums today by a friend and I have done a lot of reading here. I am looking to buy some TY DVD+R either 8x or 16x and I cannot find a dealer. I usually purchase from Newegg but the only TY blank media offered there is DVD-R. The only brands offered DVD+R there are verbatim and a few others.

One thing that confuses me is that many users have posted that they bought TY media under different brand names...such as Plextor, Verbatim...so...lol how do I know I am buying a TY, I mean where do you all buy your TYs. This is so confusing I just want to buy some TYs lol. I also live in the USA, if that makes any difference.

Thanks =)

Hi kashton, welcome to CDFreaks!

Many of our North American users buy their media from Rima which have a selection of Taiyo Yuden media.

Plextor media is always Taiyo Yuden media, but it's not widely available in North America. Verbatim use Taiyo Yuden for some of their media here in Europe, but not in North America.

You might want to check out our CD Freaks Bargain Basement forum to find deals on Taiyo Yuden media (and other stuff).

Thank you SO much !!!

That helped a ton. I really appreciate it.
A few other questions:

At the website:
http://www.rima.com/Merchant2/mercha...ory_Code=DVPTY

I am buying this for DVD-ROM burning. Would the 16x or 8x be better or does it really matter?

And for long-term DVD quality storage, would the thermal hub-printable be better or just those regular silver ones. I think I remember reading here that the silver ones just get finger prints on them easier.

And would it be better to burn the DVDs at 4x speed anyways to make the quality better? My DVD burner is a fairly new PLEXTOR and can burn at 16x.

And I'm guessing that TY makes good CD-Rs too?

Thanks again sorry I don't know much about these things

Both are good but the 8x is more widely compatible with older burners. Many think that the 8x DVD+R Taiyo Yuden is some of the best DVD media ever made. If you don't care about burn speed, I suggest getting the 8x and burning them at 8x.

There shouldn't be any difference in how long these will last, except for normal variation between batches.

If you have a Plextor 716/755/760 I think the optimal burning speed for the 8x DVD+R TY media is 8x. It's possible that 6x can be slightly better, but I don't think the difference would be significant. Burning at 4x should work fine, but I don't think the result will be better than burning at 6x or 8x.

Yes they do! You can see Rima's selection here. I wouldn't personally buy the plain silver ones (code 1160) but rather some of the other with a better protected top surface, which matters far more for CD media than for DVD media.

Is there a list of manufacturers that STILL use TY discs? The only TY that I've found in B&M stores is at least 3 years old. Every truck night at Best Buy, where I work, I check the DVD's for MIJ on the given brands, and there are literally NONE. They're all Taiwanese or Malaysian discs. I've been fortunate enough to find some older Sony DVD+R 50pc. cakeboxes MIJ with YUDEN000 T02 in them at Circuit City and Kmart though. Luckily, they use the same UPC as the 16X Taiwan crap, and I was able to use my discount at BBY and return them to CC. Soon enough, though, it seems that TY will vanish from B&M shelves. ;(

It depends on where you exactly live. I guess you're in North America.
TY can still be found in B&M stores as Plextor, and sometimes as Panasonic, TDK, Maxell or Verbatim here in Europe. But you're right, the price pressure makes companies move to cheaper countries and factories.

I still see Panasonic-branded TYG02 at Best Buy stores near Atlanta, GA, but they're only sold in slim jewel cases and are about $1/disc in 10 packs.

Hai, I am from Malaysia. So I would like to ask anyone knows where to buy taiyo yuden products here?
I can't find one here. I am using Imation now but it seems that mine is third class according to some websites ratings.
Therefore I would like any suggestions what brand is offering taiyo yuden brand here?
TQ!

Imation is ok media but nothing special.
As you're in Asia, you should look for Verbatim/Mitsubishi or That's media. Some of the Verbatim/Mitsubishi and all of the That's (if available) will be Taiyo Yuden.

Hi,
Have a possibility buy a cake of Verbatim 16x DVD-R (TYG03) or 16x DVD+R (YUDEN000 T03). I know now quality of TY not like 8x (for example Pastel), but in any case in opinion what’s kind now record better?
Drive Lite-On LH 18A1P.
Thanks.

I would prefer YUDEN000 T03 over TYG03 but that's IMO.

My Lite-On LH-18A1P records YUDEN T03 slightly better than TYG03, but it's minimal difference. I'd toss a coin personally, as I don't mind whichever I use

For some reason my Yuden000-T02-000 burns much better than any of the 300 Yuden000-T03-000 I have ever bought. I was expecting the same quality with the 16X Yudens that I got with the 8X, but I was sadly mistaken.

I'd toss a coin too, as my Litey 1635S does TYG03 pretty well, too. T03 also does well with my Liteys.

Or, even better, in the DVD Burners subforum. There are "Post your scans and questions" threads for each and every model.

I'm living in Holland, as far as I could see Rima doesn't ship to European countries. Do you, or anyone else, have an address in Europe where I can get these TY DVD+R YUDEN000T02 8x (printable)?

Thanks for the quick reply

I'm still a bit puzzled: I used Verbatim DVD+R 16x printable MCC 004 for quite some time, never had any problem. But I read that the Verbatims got worse since the new discs come from India instead of Taiwan. Taiyo Yuden has a good reputation, nevertheless the 16x DVD YUDEN000T03 seems to be not as good as the 8x YUDEN000T02. So I thought I would make a good choice with YUDEN000T02. But the price is rather high. Do you think this 8x TY disc is worth its price compared with the Verbatim 16x, especially with regard to its longevity?

Can I answer?
Well, the answer is: YES, YUDEN000 T02 IS worth the money. I'll explain my point in a bit strange manner:

You know, in Belarus there is no unbranded TY media at all. If you have a good luck, you can only find Verbatims made in Japan, which seem to be VERRRRY rare! Once I was very surprised when I saw "Made in Japan" string on a freshly bought Verbatim 16x DVD+R 25pcs package. My first thought even was: it is a fake, it can't be TY ! So, I was very surprised, when the MIJ-ness of the discs confirmed to be true. And now, already 2 months passed, I haven't seen them anymore, only taiwanese and indian.
Well, but these were 16x, YUDEN000 T03 discs! There is no YUDEN000 T02 at all! No Verbatim Pastel! No Plextors (frankly speaking, I've seen them only for 1 time as Plextor 4x DVD+Rs in Jewel cases. Bought only 3 pcs . If I had known they were TY, would buy MUCH more!)! So, if I could get some YUDEN000 T02 discs, I would be really happy! And I would pay 3xPriceOfTYMedia in that case!
At the same time, T03s are fine. I don't complain, but a bit not sure, if they are of the same longevity as T02 or worse (or maybe better, who knows?).
