Hi

DrageMester (the mod of this forum) split your message off from this thread, and created a thread for you, he didn't delete it...it's here:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=187501

You'll get more replies/help with your own thread - not many people will see it tucked away in this one.

Hmmm... will all of these fakes floating around, can I even be sure that these are genuine?

http://meritline.stores.yahoo.net/ta...printable.html
Another TY product they had said it was made in Japan, but this one doesn't. Which makes me wonder...

http://www.rima.com/Merchant2/mercha...ory_Code=DMRTY
I'm hoping these are legitimate, though, since Rima is supposed to be a pretty good source of TYs.

I just hope they're compatible with my optical drive...

Welcome to CDF

You already asked this in your own thread here.

If, after a certain amount of time, your thread has no replies, simply add a message saying "bump", which will bring it to the top again.

Hi,

just an addition concerning "real" and "fake" TY-style cakeboxes:

Real TY cakebox
Any part of the spindle is marked with "FICn-L" (n=number, L=capital letter).
The base is made of two parts, base plate and axle. Material is PS. Also there is a "PAT.P" marking on the axle.
The top is made of PP (marked >PP<) and also marked with "FICn-L" (see above)

TY-lookalike box
Made entirely of PP, additionally marked with the "recycling" logo with "05" in its center. The bottom of the spindle is one part.
This is at least valid for "Platinum" branded stuff.

I wonder what it is for Maxell-style Prodisc disc cakeboxes though... I'm curious, maybe somebody from NA can tell us more about it!

Here are some pics of TY0003 or is it TY003 media (16X DVD burnables) I haven't used any of these in a long time, so forgive me for forgetting the exact code and whether they're + or -'s.
[Moderator's note by DrageMester: They are DVD+R with MID: YUDEN000 T03]

Here you go, this stuff is labeled as Tayo Yuden, Made in Japan. I purchased these as a 100pk for under $40USD from rima.com

No worries there. That's an official TY product code (DVD-R47VAlWPPSK). Compare to the same product sold on another site:

We can check codes etc. once we get the cakebox, but when we order online, what can we do? I guess we can only try to choose reputable suppliers? I tried authorized TY suppliers but they are really expensive. The question is: do we know for sure that Supermediastore, Rima, etc. sell genuine TY media? Can we assume that, if we order from them, it will be the real thing?

Well, I purchased the above pictured media from rima.com and KProbe2 reports it as Tayo Yuden media... so if that's not enough proof of the pudding, I'm not sure what else we'd need to do, plus I also only bought from rima.com because I read many others' posts who bought from there too and got authentic media.

Those TY DVD-Rs you were showing on Mertinline are their "valueline" products. They are actually made by Taiyo Yuden in Japan but they are considered the B grade product. TY "A" grade product should look like this: http://www.burnsmart.com/ty-8x-tsl-dvdr.html. I think the "B" grade works okay, but I'd pay $6.00 more for the A grade media.

Are there differences in quality between the same type of disc (say TYG02) sold under different brands, like Fuji, Panasonic, Plextor etc. ?
If so, which are the best ? I am interested mostly in TYG02 and YUDEN000 T02, and only in brands which are available in Europe.

The only T02s I've used have been Verbatim branded, I can get them here in the UK if I look hard enough, so being in Europe, you may be able to find some.

They're excellent, best media I've used.

Thanks for your response, but I was thinking more along the lines of Germany, Austria and other european states in the area. Anyway, I'd rather go with brands that only sell TY, like Panasonic, Fuji etc., not with the ones where you have to check, as I'll have somebody else do the shopping. In the end however, it's quality that matters most.
Any recommendations or comparisons ?

Fuji: No TY since a few years, sometimes YUDEN000 T02 shows up in Amaray boxes (MIJ).
Panasonic: Only -R is TY. +R is Ricoh.
Why not get some Verbs instead? You just have to look for the "Made in Taiwan" on the Verbs.

Somebody has some FAQ updates to make
I have nothing against Verbatims, however I would like to know if there are variations in quality based on brands, both TYG02 and T02. Say between Panasonic, Plextor and Verbatim Was your recommendation based on quality, or availability ?
And yes, looking for the "Made in..." label can be harder than it seems, particularly on a busy shopping day.

The MII (and MIS, only applying to DL) Verb cakeboxes have a rough bottom and most MIT cakeboxes don't have a rough bottom.
