The dye layer on a DVD is sandwhiched between two plastic discs which are bonded together, thus the label does not come into contact with the dye.
Er... you make it sound like if it was more OK to put labels on DVDRs than on CDRs... - though it's the other way round!

This is not 100% correct. It's the metallic reflective layer that is just under the label (if any).

CDR:
----label or top layer (if any) ---
~~~~~reflective layer~~~~~~
======polycarbonate========
DVDR (single layer):
----label or top layer (if any) ---
41.8x speed!! Wonder how that happened.
It took more than an hour to get this long in the scan. Don't think it would ever finish so i stopped it. Had to switch to LiteOn to get more from the scan and at 1x
Hmmm - Just from a random test i found some better discs (not sure if they are HP & Mr Platinum branded) with good ole ricoh id. Even if they are older than the crap discs i posted earlier here they seem in pretty good condition despite the full cd label.
ROFL, well i was just checking up on some of my stick label discs, 5 of them are DL discs, double wammy ey? Well when scanning the disc at 4x on my Sony DRX-800UL, and nero cd/dvd speed just hangs at the 3900mb mark LOL. Ok, the disc was CMC DL media, BUT i always get around 90% QS scores and the worst ive got so far is 84%.
Agreed, but I remember having read about special plastic labels that didn't induce any of the problems we experience with paper labels. So I'm still interested..
I think its safe to say, with the labels i had been using that they are alot safer on SL media than DL media. see scan: Oh and before you guys start shouting omg, 'prOn'!!, its not, its a backup of the spanish film 'sex and lucia'
I have never had a problem with cd (though it has been ages since I burned but the rare occational cd). I never tried paper labels on dvd because of the rotational speed. Back before 16x media became common, it was said by a few that 16x was the maximum speed because spinning the average polycarbonite disk faster could cause the disk to loose structural integrety, and at that rotational speed, we all know that would be bad. Some of you might have seen a bit fly apart on a dremel, and if you have ever been cut by a metal bit that lost integraty, you know it can be nasty. Of course a dremel turns a bit faster. I went looking for the rotational speed of a dvd (couldn't remember it) and ran across this pretty quick.
http://www.hitachi.com/New/cnews/040422.html
Looking a bit further, it seems that the rotational speed may be 9200 rpm. Thats fast enough to scare me (keep in mind the small size of a dremel compared to a dvd). With larger tools they become substantially more dangerious, even at speeds slower than that. I really cannot see a paper label holding up to that kind of rpm. Thats why I have never tried it.
So it's not paper, maybe it can make a real difference as according to Memorex themselves, it's paper that is the problem...
Though... I usually don't believe marketing claims.
While DVD labels do look nice, all of my labeled DVD backups do not work at all. I strongly encourage people not to use paper labels as mentioned above. I did however peel off one of my labels with a hair dryer and a lot of patience, and tried it in my DVD player and it worked better than it did before, but not flawlessly since I think the removal process gummed the DVD up a bit. Specifically I used the cheap Memorex 3-in-one label kit that claims that it will work for CD/DVD, but obviously it doesn't. I recently saw in a Best Buy that Memorex has labels "guaranteed" to work for DVD's. Why then would they sell you CD/DVD labels for cheap if they are not guaranteed? I guess anything for a buck.
I applied hundreds of Avery labels to Verbatim CD-R discs back in the day and none of the discs became unreadble. (A couple of my unlabeled CMC discs went bad, though.)
I think this thread is primarily to warn about sticky lables on DVDRs, not on CDRs..
Santa is right ...however, my bad experiences with labels on CDRs led me never to put a single label on any of my DVDRs
Exactly the same for me!
After reburning close to 50 CDs that had paper labels on them and were very difficult to read, I learned my lesson and have not tried recreating the experience with DVDs!
Sir,
A label with a specially treated surface has been patented. This allows the label to be written on with permanent markers or ball point pens, and eradicated up to 1000 times by the simple use of an ordinary eraser. Does not harm the media and is a clever answer in my opinion.
Okay, I am very new to this forum and to finding out why my DVD's don't always play.
I have used and still use Paper labels on my CD's and DVD's. Now I am seeing that the general consensus is that they are bad for the disks. Is there an alternative?? I guess I am "anal" when it comes to labeling my DVD's, I like to have colorful labels that remind me what the movie is about. I have tried TDK's "PrintOn" DVD+R's only to have 99% of them fail as a result to what TDK claims is "A bad run of DVD's".
So, here is where I am stuck.....if using labels is bad and PrintOn DVD's are no good, then how can I continue to make nice looking disks??
Someone....HELP??
Verbatim Printable discs and a printer capable of printing on discs (Epson and Canon both make them).
Loads of info in the CD & DVD Printers and Labelling Forum
