SONY CD-R media failing

I have recently discovered that a number of Sony CD-R media written months ago can not be read completely (I get CRC errors while trying to read some of the files on the discs). These media are SONY SUPREMAS which I though were of good quality. The CD-R media were kept in plastic cases and rarely used. I have never before had the same problem with other media. Anyone else had similar problems?

Re: SONY CD-R media failing

SONY's media with sony atip has been known for quite high variations in quality. Specially the stuff made by LEADDATA.

Re: SONY CD-R media failing

I have now switched to DVD media, but have made a lot of backups on SONY DVD-R & DVD+R. I worry if they they start failing too in a few months.

Re: SONY CD-R media failing

The sony DVD-Media I've had have been made by daxon (with sony MID) and is quite good quality. So I don't think that you have to worry.

Re: SONY CD-R media failing

SONY uses a lot of different manufacturers for there media.
The SONY (japan) and the media made by DAXON are okay.
However the cd-r's made by Lead Data are questionable.(These are the ones about which the problems have been reported.
So differnt product and different manufacturer so I don't see any reason why the DVD recordables would fail very soon.

Re: SONY CD-R media failing

I'm also having trouble with my sony recordable cd-r supremas that were manufactured in mexico.

I guess location of manufacture means a heck of a lot.

Mine tend to burn the first ~50 MB of data and then screw up or crash.
By all appearances the full 700 MB was used since for music media there is the lead in portion with all the track information.

I guess I'll have to put in under the warranty

It can, but the condition of your recording equipment matters a lot too. Test a disc from another manufacturer in the same drive, and if works, you know you've got crappy discs. If it doesn't, it's the drive that's on the blink.

COO (Country of Origin) matters only in as much as it provides clues as to the company who produced it, and what kind of standards they use - for example most here would avoid Made In China (tends to be 3rd rate stuff regardless of manufacturer) Made In Hong Kong (variable quality media often with misappropriated MIDs), Taiwan and India, considerably better (CMC MAG, Moser Baer India, Prodisc etc) while most recommend anything Made In Japan (Taiyo Yuden ) or Singapore (Verbatim makes DL DVDs there).

I tend towards MIJ media these days, just like every Toyota anyone in my family ever had stayed on the road for 20 years with almost no maintenance, so Taiyo Yuden could be called the Toyota of optical media. Nothing fancy, just pure reliability.

I have a pack of 100 Sony cd-r supremas. I think it's the cd's that suck. I tested it with a TDK cd-r and it worked fine. Plus I have a brand new litescribe dvd burner so it can't be that.
