Blank Media Discuss, Some DVD-RW & Multisession Qs at Consumables forum; I haven't any scans I've got to hand at the moment but I'd like to pose a few DVD-RW (and I guess applies to +RW too) questions. I haven't any scans I've got to hand at the moment but I'd like to pose a few DVD-RW (and I guess applies to +RW too) questions. Hopefully they are not too newbish..

First up..

When re-burning over a used disk what sort of PIE/PIF levels would you expect on a scan? What I've seen in the past is levels up around the 100 PIE av despite the original burn having very low levels (I use 4x Verbatims). Will PIEs & PIFs get progressively higher over time/burns?

Second..today for the first time I started a multisession disk which I intended to do 3 sessions over a space of time. I was using a BenQ DW1650 in an external enclosure.

The oddity was the scan started with a single 100+ PIE spike and then the rest of 1.70gb had an average of 5. PIFs were fine.

I thought it was a one-off so I tried it on another fresh disk and then same happened. I switched enclosures and same again.

In the end I decided to forego the multisession and do a straight burn on another new DVD-RW and no spike..PIE peak was below 20, av. under 6.

So can anyone explain why that repeatedly happened to the multisession disk? And is it anything to be concerned about?

Ta..

Yes, RW does wear out.
Unlike CD multisession, the DVD multisession is not reliable and should not be used.

Ok thanks for that..

I have seen a DVD-RW on the second burn go to much higher levels but I don't know if it's worth losing sleep over as obviously if you're using them it's not for archiving.

I'll avoid that multisession option.

I prefer DVD-RAM for archiving, if it has to be rewritable, because it has that verification function.
DVD+RW is intended for short term storage (like, giving a friend some files).

I disagree 100% for DVD+RW media.
Multi-session burns with DVD+RW media are even more compatible than for CD-R(W) media, because the disc always appears as a single-session disc.
